i always hate when the characters have unnatural hairstyle that look like it needs a whole factory of hairspray to make it look that way. you know, like a cosplay wig: rigid like it's a helmet. and yes it's a dig to old gen jpop idol look
the newer manga have characters with more trendy hairstyle but also look natural. more flowy, like a well-conditioned hair and it gives the characters more "real" kind of feeling instead of cartoonish
