See, the difference between your comment and theirs is that you know it comes down to preferences, but their comments insisted that MC is egotistical when he's objectively not (because he doesn't look down on others and when his crush didn't like him back, he said he wasn't cool enough, not that his crush was wrong for not liking him).

I can see that, but if you read the replies on that person's comment, they were so much harsher than what they even said. "Egotistical" might not be the right word, but I can understand where they are coming from without claiming they are "jealous" or "never got attention like that" and the like. I don't believe that the use of the wrong word (intentionally or not) creates the reason to be nasty to someone for stating an opinion that isn't necessarily wrong (meaning this topic can be considered subjective and not objective the way you say)
That behavior is being painted this way by the author, but it can be very damaging in real life (as it has been for me), so the examples from the story don't speak to the truth that I or the other commenter feel about this character. In the end, they still did not deserve those replies
