I know I might get hate for this because this site is full of delusional fujoshis/danshis, but I don’t understand why certain series are popular or how people can read through some yaoi series.

When I was younger, I found myself reading a lot of it because I didn’t know better and that’s how kids are. They read what they aren’t supposed to. But after a certain point, you grow up and realize concepts like healthy relationships and consent and you see how terrible the lack of it is. That’s why when I try to read yaoi series with “explicit content”, all I see is sex and toxic relationships.

They keep glamorizing r*pe and non-con stuff. It’s so disgusting sometimes because you have one party forcing himself on the other who is clearly stating “no”, but then it gets passed off when it’s pleasurable. Some don’t even have a plot. They have conflict and a bunch of angst and instead of having proper in counters and talking, the author makes them have sex.

And it’s not just that. It’s also the normalization of using rape or assault as a PLOT DEVICE to make the main character get saved. Like it’s a whole trope, I see it in a lot of yaoi where they just straight up show rape and assault as a form of conflict.

I know it might seem sensitive to complain about this because it’s yaoi, you should know better before reading and etc but it’s still wrong. There are better ways to portray relationships, even if they are intentionally toxic, you can make stories that have sex without using rape and assault as a conflict.

The fact that some in the comments literally hype up noncon behavior and just to justify it as “oh the seme is just cold because of childhood trauma” or “it’s hot! and they liked it at the end” or “the uke wanted it too but he’s a tsundere” is terrible too. Yaoi is a genre mostly consumed by women (that’s fine) but it’s bad when they start enjoying content like this and actually end up normalizing literal crimes. I know it’s manga and entertainment but unless it’s something like KS which was labeled as a horror and is purposely toxic, you should discuss the bad and condemn the toxic. Because if you imagine the uke as a women irl, almost all the yaoi you read would turn into news reports.

That being said, shounen ai is good. I read that sometimes.

I totally agree. And everytime someone comments about how rape was unnecessary in the story, people attack them saying they shouldn't have read the story in the first place and that they could've checked the tags. And some of them scream that "people should learn to separate fiction from reality", bruhhh a lot of underage kids read these kinda stories and some of them will probably end up developing this kinda mentality where they think that's its okay. One person even said that rape in yaoi is ROMANTIC. there's something seriously wrong with people

Wow. It's 3am and I just saw this while scrolling. You definitely have a point. I am into BL stories too and I admit that I love the concept of saving the uke but you are right. The problem about yaoi is it normalizes things that are toxic to begin with. They make it sound okay even if it's really not. It's kinda gender-biased too. Rape is never acceptable even when they do it with a man. Like duh, it's still rape. And SEX is not the answer to everything. The readers may fall into delusions that those relationships are okay, as long as they love each other but irl, it's so toxic and pure of manipulation. Romanticizing things is a no no.
