I love the main character HOWEVER the love interest is VERY SEVERELY underdeveloped. I can get behind a romance where both parties have difficulty trusting each other and being vulnerable due to their past trauma. IN THIS STORY, the MC is pushed by others to be more honest, to give more information, to stop withholding secrets. Which is great! The story NEVER pushes the Love Interest to be authentic as well. He is just CONSTANTLY reacting to the MC. CONSTANTLY investigating the MC. And when asked to trust his partner? He immediately resorts to confining the MC's independence and freedom. This only gets resolved AT THE END. He is literally like "My bad for chaining you up and blinding you, I didnt intend to leave you vulnerable to enemy attacks. Aight, moving on." AND THEY MOVE ON LIKE THAT WAS JUST A TINY BUMP ON THE ROAD. WHHHAAAAAAAAAATTTTT. MC gets CONSEQUENES OUT THE WAZOOH for not opening up (Which I appreciate btw). However the Love Interest is NEVER PUSHED to change. The MC asks for change, but the Love Interest NEVER MAKES MEANINGFUL, PERMANENT CHANGE for him. ITS BULLSHIT. The only time he changes is at the end AFTER HE RECIEVES GOOD COOKIE!!!!!! NO SIR!!! You DO NOT deserve cookie after DRUGGING, BLINDING and CHAINING your boyfriend up. I am GOOD with some dark themes so long as the Love Interest is redeemable. The story OBVIOUSLY tries to redeem him. But its SOOO HALF-ASSED. 2/stars. Love the MC though.

I dont really agree with the opinion that Alicia is a monster villainous that deserves the most terrible ending imaginable. I think this story has done a great job at making her multi-faceted. Its clear Alicia cares for Paula, its clear that Alicia has gone through unimaginable childhood trauma, and has shared in the grief of losing her siblings. Paula perceives Alicia as the beautiful, better sister who was favored by their abusive father. WE ARE NEVER SHOWN WHAT ALICIA'S HOME LIFE ACTUALLY WAS LIKE WHEN PAULA WASNT THERE. There aint NO WAY, her father NEVER abused Alicia WHEN THAT MAN KILLED HER SIBLINGS IN FRONT OF HER!!! He was a horrible person who kept EVERYBODY on survival mode. Alicia is a very emotionally stunted girl, who is striving to survive the best way SHE KNOWS HOW. Which means lashing out to others, being petty and spiteful, lying and objectifying herself to use her good looks as an advantage for survival. She is a hurt person, so she hurts the people closest to her (Paula), and projects her own pain onto others to make herself feel better. She is definitely the antagonist to Paula's story. Alicia is a PERFECT example of what unsolved generational trauma perpetuates. She isnt physically abusive, or comparable IN ANY WAY to her father. But she is a horrible sister to Paula. Alicia is SO STUCK in her own grief and problems, that she is unable to give her sister the emotional, mental or physical support that she needs during trying times. I really appreciate Alicia as a character, because this is a very realistic outcome that family trauma creates between loved ones. ITS SO HARD to learn to love someone when you have been pitted against each other to survive. ITS HARD to even maintain a "functioning" relationship with your sibling after LITERALLY GOING THROUGH THE CHILD-HUNGER GAMES!!!! I enjoy Paula and Alicia's disfunctional relationship AND I HOPE, we get the opportunity to see Alicia grow up and mature. Even if they cant ever be siblings to each other after the horrors they both have gone through, seeing Alicia in a time-skip or something, watching her learn to live in a healthy manner as and older person would be a rewarding way to conclude her story. In real life, some people dont even survive their trauma. Watching Alicia take "retribution" for lying to a noble by going to jail for life, getting her hand cut off, or a beheading is NOT the ending that poor girl deserves. She is a greedy little shit head, but she is ALSO a child and a victim. I empathize with her and Paula's story. For my personal life, I'm just glad me and my siblings left our abuse in our teens, and fell into good hands. We have definitely rekindled our very broken relationships and, while we arent 100% there, at least we can confidently say that we love each other <3
i pretty much agree with you, however i fail to see how alicia actually cares for paula? i've been reading this for so long now that i don't really remember all that happened anymore. but when did she ever care for her? in my eyes alicia is sticking with paula because it's easier than being all alone and there doesn't seem to be any affection or sisterly love coming from her. in fact quite the opposite, alicia is constantly using paula as a stepping stone for her own agendas. so idk.
I’m gonna hold your hands while I say that SHE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT PAULA. I’ve read the novel, she even tried to kill her even though Paula was trying to help her. So no, that girl is a pure villain
I totally respect your opinion but I very much disagree, Alicia has been nothing but vile to Paula and I don't think she cares about her even a tiniest bit. Maybe she has some reasons she's like that, but I don't think she has any affection for Paula at all, I just think she stuck to her because Paula is resourceful and Alicia knew she could guilt her into supporting her as well.
You are wrong there, it was shown very clearly that the father didn't abuse her and instead worked with her, because her looks benefited him and which is why compared to paula and the other siblings, she was 1st priority and was treated with intentional bias.
And alicia never cared for her. For her, staying with paula was simply easier, so that she can have a roof over her head with food, without having to work for it. And even she made it seem like their situation was paula's fault.
How could u say all that when it was so clear Alicia hates Paula so much?????? She treated Paula like shit since day 1.

I understand your 2nd paragraph, however, how is witnessing your siblings death NOT abuse???? Just because she and her father had a transactional relationship going on that protected her from his abuse, DOESNT MEAN baring witness to it and feeling constantly like he may turn that violence on you isnt abuse?? And anyways, their home life was only portrayed from Paula's POV. There isnt enough context for me to sit here and state that Alicia has never experienced adverse childhood experiences and ONLY PAULA can pull the "Trauma" card, just because she is a better person out of the two.
She definitely did and does treat Paula like shit, she isnt a good person. But the point of a story is to have complex characters who can have many different reasons behind the things they do, or have experiences other people relate to, that doesnt absolve the character from their horrible misdeeds.
Alicia definitely sticks to Paula because Paula is useful, and she is angry and mistakenly redirects her resentment at Paula. However there has been a lot of hot and cold moments with her. One day she attacks Paula and rages at her, the next she is comfortable and more so AMICABLE having her around. She IS opportunistic AND she is also - at times - responds pretty passively to Paula's presence. I am not saying she cares for Paula as in, will go out of her way to healthily engage with their relationship. Alicia "cares", as in, still retains a "fondness" of Paula because they are sisters and were raised together (despite circumstances) Which is often drowned out by her anger, so these peaceful moments are pretty rare.
i think you're quite wrong in saying that alicia "cares" for paula. the "fondness" that you're talking abt doesn't exist. alicia is awful to paula. i agree that the death of her siblings may have affected her and caused her trauma but still that doesn't stop alicia from using this trauma to gain something over paula. alicia uses paula as a stepping stone, as you said she's opportunistic. her whole character arc comes with her wanting to get away from poverty, how she'll do it doesn't matter as long as she ends up in a better place. which honestly is a valid reason. for all the hate i harbour for alicia, she represents a very realistic picture of how poverty changes or shape people. i wouldn't want her to have a bad ending bec she also deserve to get rid of poverty but she must suffer some consequences for the things she has put paula through. mainly i don't want her to be a part of paula's life anymore.
