tbf i think a lot of the frustration lies in bad writing and unsatisfying resolutions. they're not complaining about the toxicity itself, more so just how annoying the characters behave. you know that rule in writing? you could make the most evil bastard character ever and still have them be liked by the audience, but not if you make them annoying.
