Sorry for the late reply. I only skimmed the raw chapters so I might be missing some details. From what I saw, he and Kyoko dated after she broke up with Mr. Maeno. But it didn't last long and they broke up later.

I thought that too. I remember the author having one of the characters comment about how they were such a perfect match. Then they made her how she first appeared at the beginning. It made me feel bad for Max.
Perhaps that’s how they build his character. The kid was abandoned by both parents and that’s how the author was able to establish his personality.
