riftan has such a odd way of comforting maxine… like fym you rescue your wife from her abusive fathers home (mid-beating mind you) and your first real conversation w her is you yelling at her and basically blaming her for the whole thing… “ WHY DID YOU GO” “WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME” idk man maybe because your treat her damn near the same minus the physical aspect?
are we reading the same story? he is literally blaming himself for everything…as he thought she never even wanted to marry him in the first place. i think his reaction is incredibly realistic tbh (as fictional as this story is LMAO) and this conversation is one that needed to be had, they’re adults that must communicate (finally)!
Y'all just trying to find anything to mess with riftan. You've only read whatever you wanted and forgot that he literally laid his feelings bare in this chapter. Yes he said " why YOU didn't tell me, why YOU went back... etc " BUT he also said " I am to blame, I got you pregnant, I shouldn't have brought you, I made you suffer, I wanted only to see your face, I shouldn't have married you because I knew you didn't want me" and so on. And he NEVER blamed her. He even said "I made YOU follow ME" when we perfectly know that he asked her to stay in Anatole and she chose not to. He blames himself and his "why"s are just questions, he wants to understand. So please stop. He never treated her like her father, otherwise her character development would never have happened. And she said it herself, she LOVED that he treated her like she was SPECIAL. And that here contradicts whatever nonsense you're spouting
i think i genuinely hate this story but i invested so much time into i can’t drop it. like why is maxi so coddled by everyone around her it makes me upset for her. who thought it’d be a good idea to hide the ins and outs of HER body from her like???? everyone around her makes me sick the way they infantilize her especially riftan and the knights. even though these people are “close” to her in a way she hasn’t really experienced before their actions go to show they’re not loyal to her nor have her best interests in heart. i just want her to go somewhere far away watch her learn to live for herself and find something that makes her truly happy.
I mean in this instance, I understand why they didn't tell her about the misscarriage. She literally escaped death and adding mental torture in knowing you miscarried would have pushed her over the edge. At the same time, I agree that people not being truthful with her and acting different with her is a major issue. Probably why she liked being around Ruth so luch, as he takes her wishes seriously.

every chapter is so good i’m going to have to let this marinate for a bit
