In my opinion the Banana Fish manga is miles better than the anime. But if you prefer anime to manga, it isn't a bad adaptation (not really my taste though).

9/10 times the manga is better, so if you plan on doing both, watch the anime first. That way you can enjoy it, and then when you read the manga you'll enjoy it even more instead of downgrading.

I think you should watch the anime first, so you can at least appreciate the anime adaptation because when you read the manga first, you'll be kind of nit picking at what they left out and what not. So I think it's better to just watch the anime first with a clear mind and then read the manga to know the whole story. Not saying that the anime was bad, it was good but the manga goes into more details that makes more sense.

Precisely for that I do not know what to do because many have said that many pieces are missing in the anime.
