It's just a nightmare that they both share. If you read the first chapter again, guards came into his house and tried to detain him in prison but he refused. So this is a "what if" situation, where MC agreed to be sent to prison, and ML followed him. They've been in prison long enough for MC to look at his wife in a new light, as ML was the only one who didn't abandon him. In the end, they still got killed by either the 1st or 4th prince's people. And then they woke up.

I feel sympathy for the 1st prince. He is the true victim in all this. He is actually a nice kid. He has been told his father is the emperor and wanted to have that parental love, as his mother barely gave him any. And he just wanted some love, but he could feel some distance from the emperor. So he was jealous when Caryle came into the picture because the emperor gave him love. The 1st prince didn't know why he was given coldness but this kid that popped out of nowhere received it all.
However, he did try to be a brother because Caryle was a nice kid and was calling him brother. The 1st prince started to feel he had family. He started trying to get close and gave Caryle sweets, not knowing it was poisoned by his mother. He felt so guilty about it. Even though it wasn't his fault. After his mother death, he found out he wasn't the emperor actual son. He understood why he never gotten the fatherly love he wanted. He agreed/accepted to fake his death, because it was known the 1st prince poisoned the 2nd prince, and promised to never come back.

In this same life he realizes his feelings and while the same mc as well comes to love i don't know if I am right about MC's feeling in this life but as promised before that whoever ml falls in love with she will kill them so she committed sucide leaving the ml to suffer but i can conform that in the next life they fall for each other

Personally I don't think she would even have the heart to like him back and kill herself happily as the perfect form of revenge leaving the ml with regret guilt insanity etc... Etc
