I think people are misunderstanding the assault part, I usually despise how rape is portrayed in bl because it’s so fetishised which is YUCK but here I think the author portrays is as it is - a crime (you can see how they used blood when portraying the scene, how Manny was confused on why it was happening). Religious trauma is a real thing and the priest found Manny at his lowest. Even in the real world we see how many priests and religious figures abuse their powers, prey on the vulnerable. The victims think it’s what they are meant to do, follow whatever they say because it’s part of ‘religion’, they don’t realise they are a victim.
Manny even refers to Reverand as an “angel that was sent to him by Louis”. In Manny’s case he thinks he deserves this, when the priest met him he tells him “it is true that sometimes god brings pain to his flock, but that is only to lead us down a path he has chosen for us”. Manny thinks the ‘pain’ is part of his repentance for the crimes he has committed (the nightmares he keeps on having of the people he has killed), and hence defends the priest (which again a lot of victims do because they don’t realise they are a victim). In end of chapter 23, Reverand even says to ML “they’ll be other opportunities (to assault him) because he cannot deny me” - which is sickening but is the reality on how a relationship between an abuser and a victim works.
The latest chapter even further proves this, how manipulative the priest is and how he uses religion (using words such as ‘this is your calling’ ‘carry out your duty to god’) to manipulate MC into pulling the trigger. Saying things like ‘all I can provide you is a little courage’, making him have a false sense of security, making him feel how he is ‘helping him get through this’ and is on his side.
I think the author wrote the story quite well and I’m interested in seeing how they will further deal with this and how Manny will recover.

It’s sickening and vile how normalised rape is in mangas and how easily they brush it off like it is nothing and that the victim gets over it instantly, like it doesn’t affect the victim mentally or physically all their life.
