These two are so cute and so real. Legitimately every good friendship I've seen around me has seen this phase of strain as a result of miscommunication that was nonetheless an unintentional byproduct of the very care and consideration that forms the basis of the relationship. It falls on the immediate and the extended friend group ls to drop everything and get to working on clearing out these misunderstandings when they occur and restoring the relationship between affected parties back to normal. Because we all know that it is never that serious and situations just become complicated without anyone intentionally trying to hurt each other. In fact, actively overthinking about how to avoid hurting each other is what confuses everything in the first place. But, as long we love each other, we have all the time in the world to, one day, resolve any knots and restore our relationship back to peak health.
The FL-equivalent is a fucking pedo. Like literally, that bastard is grossest pos there is. He was a grown adult sexualizing a child. He would be horrible enough if this was the first time he met Xinlu because he's still would be a goddamn 40 Yr old coming on to a young man who is not even properly out of his teens. But he's far beyond that, he's a fucking monster. He's been making up child porn about that boy in head since back before that kid was still young enough to qualify for child prices on tickets. Why the fuck have they stuck Xinlu with this rotten fucker that deserves to be yeeted out into space far away from all civilization? Give Taeui back to Xinlu and pair this irredeemable creep with that Riegrow bitch, the other irredeemable creep. Xinlu and Taeui were far too good and likeable as characters to have had their stories derailed and soiled by these pieces of trash.
I can you where you’re coming from, but at that time Yuri was definitely not romantically attracted to Xinlu and even less sexually. He was more fascinated that someone could be as beautiful as Xinlu. And in some way, admiring someone’s beauty doesn’t have to be sexual or romantic, it can just be a a passing realization.
I get that Yuri can come off as predatory-adjacent but also, let's remember that he never thought of Xinlu sexually, nor did he ever dream of being his boyfriend. He just liked how Xinlu looked because he had never seen anyone so strikingly beautiful before. There’s a big difference between finding someone attractive and “I’d fuck that.” Admiring someone’s appearance, even a kid, doesn’t automatically make you a creep. There’s nothing inherently wrong with thinking young people are cute, adorable, or even beautiful.
Yuri also had literally every opportunity to make a move if he wanted to. He was in contact with Xinlu’s older brother, and when Xinlu almost drowned as a child and later asked who saved him, Yuri specifically asked the brother not to tell him it was him. He barely thought about Xinlu at all during those years. On top of that, Yuri knew Xinlu was pining after Taeui, yet he never did anything to pressure him into liking him back, or acted like “I saved you, so you owe me.”
Yuri had girlfriends he genuinely loved before this setting. He’s not a lust-driven person, and even when Xinlu confesses later, he still doesn’t see himself as a potential romantic partner. He never wanted to be Xinlu’s boyfriend, never thought sexually about him, and never crossed moral or physical boundaries. Calling it a child pornography is crazy
me when i don’t read a story. like omg media literacy is out the window. everybody else made good points so i’m not gonna bring them up, but i’d like to add that xinlu in both his relationships with taeui and now Yuri HE has been the predator in his relationships. In this story alone he beat Yuri and is possessive over him and sexually assaults him. Yuri has legitimately never had sexual thoughts about Xinlu. Nor did he ever interact with him when he is a child. You are making legit fiction in ur head and I advise u to reread this
Accidentally liked comment, meant to dislike. Also, Yuri only thought that Xinlu’s face looked nice, but never had the romantic or sexual interest in him. He even later points out that he had never planned to reach out to him despite having a connection with his older (meaning that he was literally just one call alway if he wanted to).
They saw each other once when they were younger, yuri thought xinlu’s face looked nice. Then that was it. The next time they had seen each other was in Berlin i think (after the incident of xinlu’s blindness).
This is just another attempt of a subcategory of porno writers who can't admit that "they're just like the other girls" and keep trying to shoehorn pseudo intellectual depth and contrived drama into their cheap porn slop as if that will be enough to qualify what they're doing as proper literature. All this does is hamper the chances of their mindless slop living a comfortable life in its own niche, instead forcing uncessary scrutiny unto it under the standards of the higher category that it carries pretensions of, at which point it can only miserably embarrass itself.
Ch.19 and the ML is a trash human being. Dude is disgustingly proud of being a shitty friend and a problematic boss. He's gloating about being nepotistic and practically said that he isn't helping out the MC in a pinch because he's an old acquaintance/friend but because he wants to fuck him. MC is dumb and gives me second hand embarrassment almost every time he talks but he isn't a bad guy. But from this chapter onwards, the seme is going to make me feel like punching his face in every time and I don't want to see the story try and vindicate his rotten outlook, so I am quitting this story.
And to the think that he had been such a respectable guy so far not letting his personal relations compromise his professional responsibilities. He was doing so good putting his clients first, and then helping out the MC on the side out of what I had assumed were only friendly intentions. And suddenly all that background goes out of the window, and he doesn't give a shit about anything else anymore? The relationship between plot consistency/logic and romance stories has to be longest ever slow burn I've ever seen.
Even the dad is goddamn angel compared to that fucking scum of an ML. Are you people that low on reading comprehension and logical reasoning? Are you that much of a slave to what the author feeds you that you can't reason for yourself? If anyone had done to your so-called good guys half of what Mo Ran did to others, they would've been made out to be irredeemable villains and y'all would've been cursing them out in the comments. What a shitty story. The plot was meh and lacklustre throughout. I only read it for the brothers but it ended with throwing a pity party for an already less than sympathetic MC and justifying that monster's action with nothing more than a "because I said so.", leaving such a bad taste behind. Garbage. Would've been much better as a shounen with the littlest brother as the protagonist who eventually has to bring justice to the people by defeating the man who used to be his master. If you want to send out the message that it's okay for your protags to screw over others horribly in order to benefit themselves, then don't portray other characters, who haven't fallen nearly as low in doing unto your protags what they have already being doing to others, as villains. Amorality for the protagonist, morality for others is not cute.
It seems as though you’re bringing modern ethics into a historical world, where societal norms are very different. When someone commits a crime they are jailed and or killed. Mo Yong stated that all the people he had buried alive were thief’s, murderers, etc. Those people would’ve been executed anyways for their crimes. And we find out later that all of them survived, they all just lost some life energy, which comes back with time. Furthermore, in martial arts worlds the strong rule. There is no right or wrong like we have irl modern society. Those things aren’t always the only contenders to whether someone lives or dies. Sometimes it’s simply them losing a fight and being weaker than the other. Sometimes it’s revenge, or justice, or maybe just for fun. There might be laws the general public follows, but the government can’t enforce those on such overpowered martial artists. So, saying that Mo Yong is a terrible person isn't just white and black. Even irl modern society there are laws for executing criminals. Mo Yong just used those people to his own advantage rather than having them dead or rotting in jail.
Lastly, just because you don’t like one character doesn’t mean the whole thing is bad. I’ve read many stories and majority of them I don’t like at least one character. There’s always one that pushes the boundaries, because that’s what makes it entertaining. It’s the whole point of the story. The author has to create drama and that’s just one way it’s possible. It allows readers to have a common enemy, to ask moral questions, be interested in the plot, etc.
Another yaoi trash where they're trying to tell you that a boytoy or girltoy is more important than family, that they should be always be treated kindly, given endless benefit of the doubt and accomodated no matter how grossly defective they may be but you should subject everyone else, even your family, to the harshest, most unrelenting scrutiny. They're trying to indoctrinate you with the poison that family is always the problem, never you and definitely never your pet, and being yourself is about abandoning your family and putting a stranger over everything and everyone else just because you have the hots for them. This is another one of those garbage romances that is polluted with the idea that you stick with your hoe (note: hoe is meant to gender neutral here) no matter what but only keep family and friends around if they're perfect at all times. These people act as if anything you do for friends and family is a favour but a lowly sexual relationship has a natural claim to your utmost care and effort. When any healthy, intelligent person would instinctively know that it's supposed to be the other way around.
One of the very few areas that I concede that less advanced societies are better than us in is the understanding of interpersonal relationships. They understood that kinships were the most important and essential human bonds and gave them the position of primacy. With friendships and alliances following right behind. Sexual relationships were looked down upon and treated as a frivolity as they should be. They had it right. This mate control, parasocial stalker level
insanity should be limited to the shamed and shadowed corners of culture but unfortunately, it's overflowed out of the fringes and polluted even the mainstream.
Translation for the people:
"Hi, I read a gay romance and got personally offended that the characters chose their partner over their toxic family. Now I'm spiraling into a TED Talk about how sex is evil, love is a scam, and ancient societies had it right. Apparently, caring about your partner makes you brainwashed, but blind loyalty to family—no matter how shitty they are—is peak intelligence. Also, I hate fun, affection, and anything that makes me feel things."
Hope that helps. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
You know, “blood is thicker than water” has been bastardized, but it doesn’t mean what people think it means. It’s actually the opposite.
The full quote is "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." What it means is that bonds forged through shared experiences, loyalty, and chosen relationships are stronger than those formed by blood or family ties and…
I remember reading once that your SO should be the most important person because they are the person YOU chose to love.
Hajime from Fruits Basket Another also said it well when talking about his biological grandpa.
So, no there is nothing wrong in choosing your partner if family is no good.
God, is that girl annoying! I am supposed to root for someone who is nearly an adult yet doesn't know how to treat people like humans? "I didn't have parents" is not a good enough excuse for acting the way she does. Buddy, you had everything else. Until recently, you were the only female offspring that the duke had. You were the tentative heir and all the privileges that came with it. You never had a competition threatening your future until now. So, why are you such a bitch to everyone! I can understand your aggression against the other candidate and the fact that you're on edge but you are old enough to know right from wrong, to know not to treat other people the way you do. You are old enough to control your impulses and to not abuse the people serving you. Why is the story writing trying to potray her as the victim when she is out there degrading, assaulting and abusing the servants for no good reason but also, presenting the other potential heir as the embodiment of evil for acting antagonistic towards the MC when she does clearly have a reason for it?
This is why I hate this breed of self-insert fanfiction that has oversaturated all genres of manga and related art forms. They struggle to remain consistent with themselves even for a single chapter. These works are worse than Mary Sue. This is Mary's mom, Deux ex machina, who earlier used to stay in the background taking care of everything for her dear princess but apparently she wanted her own time to shine. This MC does not make a compelling hero protagonist. She needs to be an antagonist who either gets reformed after an encounter with the protagonist or learns their place once and for all.
There's a very good reason why there exists the time-honored tradition of these flawed characters only being deuteragonists, tritagonists, secondary characters, arc antagonist, main villain and such, but rarely a hero. Even the stories that do feature them as a protagonist uses them to teach a lesson to readers to not be like the protagonist. Because they just don't work. Presenting them as the POV "positive" character in a hero vs villain story just makes the inconsistency in logic blatantly obvious. Such stories should not, then, expect the reader to cheer for such a protagonist while simultaneously booing the supposed villain, when there's hardly a difference between the two. Often the villain is more sympathetic.
But, no, centuries of literary tradition was stupid, according to a certain generation of people, for not writing their protagonists as OP, infallible gods that must be worshipped unquestioningly. Character growth, to them, is so uncool. So, they decided to correct the course of literature and ended up suffocating the whole genre with their chuunibyou fantasies.
Also, the setting is just so hilarious that I can't look past it. Isn't the power transfer thing just like primogeniture? It has never crossed the minds of a single royal family that they needed to kill all their other kids once the tentative heir safely survived to adulthood and produced the next generation of potential heirs. Why the hell do they need to kill the other daughters once one of them manifests the power? Nothing makes sense here. If the duke only needs one daughter to manifest the power and then, must kill the rest, what does he keep the son around for? Since only daughters can inherit the mystical power, and you are supposed to kill the ones who don't, what are they having sons for? Shouldn't they be killing male offsprings at birth, then? Is it that only males in the family can produce female offsprings capable of inheriting the power? If not, why kill non-mystical daughters and not sons? Even evilness should make some logical sense, come on.
Given this ridiculous background, I even understand the duke not caring about the MC. He is not exactly a father to either of those girls, yet. He's just a boss (more like a master) who happens to be genetically related to them. I sympathize as well. Given that these people are expected by some higher power to kill the spares, it just makes sense to treat female offsprings as a tool, until the heir has been decided, and only then, adopt the winner as your child. After all, you shouldn't mix up your pets and your livestock or else you'd end up with neither.

The girl co-worker is so based in her principles. Judging people for exactly the right things. What an absolute "bros before hoes" queen. Why do we need to follow cringey, hoe-crazy MC and ML and their dumb romance when we could've instead been following a sweet slice of life shoujo or an action adventure shounen centered around that lady and her "girls" instead.
