It kind of feels like the plot is going nowhere. I’m up to 157, and there hasn’t really been a big shift since like….the backstory section. The power dynamic between mother and daughter is basically the same….should I continue?
The story takes its time but in my opinion it is definitively going somewhere. If it's too slow-paced for you then it's totally okay, you don't have to continue ! But I've read up until the most recent scanlated chapter and a lot of important things happen that do move things forward. There's just a big web to untangle and lots of characters involved.
The mother-daughter relationship started out extremely imbalanced so yeah, the daughter takes a loooong time to gather the allies and puzzle pieces she needs to take down her mother. She'll get there eventually, but a lot has to happen first.
TLDR : up to now, has the daughter reversed the power dynamic with her mom ? No. Is the story worth reading, still progressing and going in interesting turns ? Yes, in my opinion. Continue if you want, don't force yourself to read :)
Everyone’s totally valid for not liking the angst, but I personally love it and think the development is very interesting. Juheon is battling smth with his aunt that has been building up since the beginning so I don’t think the characters or story are being butchered. He’s always retreated into a standoffish person and going as far as pushing people away by being rude or threatening them outright, especially when he’s in a hard place. Homie was doing that to Dohu from the beginning too. I think he really was shocked at Dohu’s use of his character in his writing but it wasn’t that big of a deal in the end. It just seems like the things he’s dealing with in his family are just that much more stressful, that he can’t afford to rekindle their relationship. And it seems his family are quite powerful people too.
Anywho, I still like it as much as before. They’re older, experienced more stuff, it’s grittier and there’s unresolved anger and spite. I think it makes sense considering how strong the feelings are involved. Hopefully they soon realise they’re stronger together and combat whatever Juheon is desperately fighting alone.
I agree. It's always funny to me how the readers think they know the characters better than the author lol Juheon and Dohu are the author's OC's. In a way, they are their children, and they know their core personalities better than others. Just because the readers don't like the direction of the story nor the characters' actions, doesn't mean the author butchered them. This chapter and the previous one are still in the constraints of the story's 'possibilities' considering how Juheon kept everything inside without letting his vulnerabilities shown and Dohu with his stubborn streak of breaking down Juheon's walls
Hey yall, I’m enjoying the discourse on this one and every single person’s opinion is valid, and I’m here for it. On the one hand, I agree that Rosa and her mother are extremely toxic people and that yeonwoo is their victim. On the other, I think this is a very intricate, thoughtful and entertaining exploration into power dynamics. I see Rosa’s position as a rich heiress as a double edged sword. Sure she gets material comforts, anything she could possibly want, and implicit respect just for existing, but we’ve all seen how soulless and truly dehumanising the world of the powerful is. It’s quite gross, frankly, and I think Rosa is fully aware of this. Power dynamics works much differently to the rich and powerful, and I would never expect her to pursue a BDSM relationship in a healthy way because….just look at her upbringing. Date rape drugs provided at their own parties, broken families, her controlling mother and all the eyes on her at all times.
As for Yeonwoo, it’s clear that he has masochistic tendencies, and is bonded to Rosa in a way that isn’t super clear to me yet, but I think that he is definitely being taken advantage of. I think that power dynamics like this are more comfortable to him, because it’s what he knows. I think he’s given up on leading a normal life and is just like “if I’m going to be in muck forever, might as well be tied down there so I never get to hope again”. I’m interested in seeing if he’d choose to be tethered over freedom if the opportunity presented himself, his decision depending on how far gone he feels himself to be, because I don’t think he believes he deserves or even thinks about being happy.
They’re both individuals who are trapped in different ways and manipulated by the people around them. Funnily enough, I actually don’t think Rosa has that much more agency than Yeonwoo, I mean she even controls what she eats in order to advertise the family business. Rosa and Yeonwoo’s only way of rebellion/release is this messed up exchange of power, and it seems like Rosa is abusing him unilaterally (it IS still rape), but I think that Yeonwoo lets her act out because he’s also allowed to act out in turn. They’re only able to be true to themselves when they’re together. The toxic part is that, you should never have only one person to dish out all your trauma at. A healthy person has support systems and some type of emotional release, but they have neither.
