"Let’s go back to the 16th century when Genoese fustian happened to prevail over the other types produced in Italy and France thanks to its cotton weft and indigo-dyed warp. At the end of the 15th century, Vasco da Gama had indeed opened a new route to connect Europe and India, which had facilitated and lowered the cost of importing indigo, obtained from the fermentation of Indigofera Tinctoria leaves and preferred to woad to dye blue fibers such as cotton and linen.

The first depictions of Genoese fustian garments date to the 17th century and are in the paintings of the Master of the Blue Jeans, an unknown artist who became famous for having painted modest and daily life scenes, while the first known clothes are the miniature ones worn by some nativity figures from the 18th century. The oldest Genoese fustian trousers we know are yet those worn by Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1860 during the landing in Marsala"
