urusei yatsura, the tldr is that one day an alien princess named lum comes to earth and due to a misunderstanding falls head over heads for ataru who understandably is like wtf since he’s already in a relationship lmao
(lum was actually suppose to originally be a one time character in the original manga run but she got so popular the author out right said fuck it and made her a main character)
lum pretty much forces herself into his life after that and results in ataru’s girlfriend falling for another guy and dumping him
(if it isn’t clear by now I absolutely love the original series but fucking despise lum now that I’m older and don’t have rose tinted glasses on lmao)
he does come around slowly to tolerate and care deeply for lum, even if showing it is a bit of a struggle for him, but he does have moments every few episodes such as 44 and 10 in the original series that clearly make it obvious he cares for her and likes her around
ataru honestly is a very misunderstood character since he’s only 17 and it’s understandable in his shoes that lum is way out of line to try and get him to marry her that she makes him very uncomfortable when he doesn’t ‘want’ to settle down anytime soon so he often flirts with other girls much to lum’s open displeasure and is more then aware that most of his so called friends in his life only hang around him to be with lum
his character in the original anime was a bit more.. of a creep? while in the original manga he had actual balls and didn’t hesitate to outright tell lum off about her not being his girlfriend at one point, so I prefer the manga version of him over the anime series version
but anyway if you’re gonna get into the series I would read the original manga first since the original 80’s anime didn’t include everything obviously, and after that then seek out the original 80’s anime and its various respective movies after
don’t bother with the modern 2022 reboot, it sucks and cut out alot of the original stuff such as lum’s stormtroopers and redesigned her infamous bikini and lacks the love and charm the original series had
