The Last of Us has similar story tropes and it’s one of the best selling video games of all time.
That said, the writing of this story overall sucks (there’s not even chemistry between the main characters…) but that’s a failure of execution, not an issue with the trope itself (since, as other media has shown, this trope can be used to critical acclaim). And you weren’t even initially critiquing its stupidity as a story trope either, you were just critiquing the factual validity of it within the context of reality. Which… fiction exists for a reason.
It’s like having talking animals in a story. “Animals don’t have the proper anatomy to talk” yeah sure but that’s the reason why that trope is only used fiction. Meanwhile, that critique is based in reality, which, yknow, doesn’t really matter when it comes to fiction. A more fair critique would be like “why does this talking street rat from the gutters of nyc talk in a British accent” y’know?
I noticed the similarity to The Last of Us, this was like it's inept cousin. And in TLoU (the show, I never played the game), the main character is eager to help at first, because her presumption was that they just need blood samples. In that one too, it really made no sense that they wanted to harm her.
And I disagree with your example. With talking animals, you are working with an AU right off the bat. With the zombie genre, the idea is that it is our world, and a mutant virus creates zombies. We willingly suspend our disbelief regarding the feasibility of the zombies, but it is reasonable to expect the structure of the world to otherwise be the same
Right, I think I get your point, you understand that it's fiction but expect some realistic elements to it, correct? I think that's great how you look into the plots in such depth, but I do think inhumane researchs do exist or atleast used to exist. But at the end, it's also the authors world of creation. And it's worth respecting atleast not to be looked down upon, there's a reason why they mention it's a world of fiction in the first place.
And I am just a little tired of these manhwas that treat being poor like its some kind of moral failing. As far as I can tell, they feel like he needs to be punished, and taught a lesson, not because he did something wrong, but because he committed the heinous crime of being poor. Right now I'm getting more and more pissed off watching all these rich assholes get away with whatever they want in the real world, I don't think I can stomach even more of it in my entertainment. He stole an orphans inheritance, not from corrupt rich people. Based off of the amount it can also be inferred that the money was used for things other than the orphans as well. So he stole them money for himself under the excuse of “being a saint” when in reality that money was spent elsewhere.
