I think this is genuinely by far the most compelling historical i have read. And i mean it. The fact that, no characters are one dimensional and no one is the big bad villain. The fact that, every person in the story stays true to their goals but the lines blur between good and evil. The fact that, all actions can be interpreted differently depending on your own views. The selling point for me was the emperor and the empress. Their deaths were so fittingly tragic and wonderful all at once, putting them in juxtaposition to both the crown price and helena. I truly, truly do mean it when I say this — This story is genuinely beautiful.
