You can't excuse your failure to help her by citing your own single-minded devotion to protect your citizens, if she IS the very reason you could protect them so single-mindedly, in the first place: having her as a convenient cover spared you all from an open war with the royal family, thus sparing you all from having to fight on two open fronts at the same time, the beasts on one side, and the royal family on the other... So, no, you weren't just passive victims saddled with the annoying princess, you KEPT UP with that engagement because you realized there was some benefit to you too: the convenience of having her as a distraction and a deterrant from an open war with the royals... You wouldn't have had the option to focus that much of your time and resources on helping your citizens, if you'd been faced with an open war with the royals at the exact same time... thus, do give some recognition to the one who let herself be used FOR YEARS on end as as a convenient war detarrant, between you and the royals... because SHE's the reason you were free from an open fight on one side (with the royals), enough to be able to devote so much attention to the issues on the other side (as in, to the issues back home). You can't assuage your guilt by citing that as an excuse if you were only able to do that thanks to the engagement itself, ...thus USING her in your own way (and all that, while mocking her from behind her back, even) too! Admit your own part in the wrongs, if you don't want to be cast in the same light as the royals that you hate.

also can we talk about how that aide felt no remorse saying that even after knowing how mistreated she is? like anyone with bare minimum humanity would be able to separate the child from their parent's sin especially if they knew that child was also a victim of said parent not only that the fact that he was trying to free himself and his master from any guilt while claiming higher moral ground just because he has only one goal which is protect the people and that the royal family is the enemy of them which makes his words and actions towards a weak little girl who has no backer even more hypocritical cause by doing all that to her and not any other imperial family member it makes them no different from that same enemy they detest like prying on the weak is literally the reason why they hate said ruling family and nobility and like you said her being starved for affection and no one being there to guide her or teach her right from wrong of course she was gonna end up like that first tl it was a matter of time before one of the many puppeteers moving her threw her to her demise so the fact that the time that red haired sob of a brother saw when he burned her palace down while she was begging for mercy he knew deep down that he was venting his anger on her cause he could never touch who was behind her not to mention not feeling any remorse while doing all that god with every chapter that family proved to be more trash than the one before I hate them and for the first time I wish that fl just goes w her original plan of escaping far away from all those fuckers
I don't mind them being all chummy with the fugitive prince but the ex-husband's enthusiasm in following the emperor's orders is kinda weird given how at first they seemed to dislike the royal family, and it almost seemed like they lowkey suspected they might even have been behind the first duchess's death?? If that's not how it went, then the artist's skill to transition a change in conversation between unrelated different topics really sucked...

I actually like this ML because for all his privilege it's still so very obvious he's only being this passive agressive out of feeling torn between the life that's about to be imposed on him out of sheer "family duty / honor duty" (the shackles that are about to close in on him), and what he feels is his very last chance to experience something for himself, by himself, of his own choosing. ..Feels like, he's only being this inevitably unfair to her (by lying, etc) bc he just wants to take this one last chance, offered by sheer luck, to experience something REAL... to experience at least ONE relationship he actually chooses for himself (and moreover, one without the additional burden of doubting if the other person chose him only for his name... etc) before letting himself surrender to being forced by others into a life the idea of which he obviously, very obviously, hates even to imagine... He's practically in the same situation as her, his only advantage is the women forced onto him might not be abusive, ugly old hags, like the men that the trash uncle was choosing for the FL, but he still has people with a powerful hold over him (the royals, his own grandmother) trying to get him sold off in marriage with a list of potential partners he never chose himself, just because they're "convenient" for "the family"... Can't hate the guy for wanting just a bit of time out of a life of obvious constantly being shackled by others (it's obvious this is not the first time his grandmother and the royals have taken away his choices) in order to just for once choose someone (something) for himself, in his life, before submitting to a life imposed on him by others and which he obviously, VERY obviously, deepy hates.
