Other than yaoi being yaoi and often marching right into homophobia despite good intentions, this story turned out to be far better than I expected. The only problematic belief it never really challenges is the belief those guys' spout that can basically be summed up “you’re not really gay unless you’re sexually attracted to every man.”

For most of the story, I read with a sense of dread, constantly bracing myself for whatever harmful or unsettling bullshit they might seemingly endorse next. That tension is precisely what makes the ending so effective. Once every relationship, every conflict is resolved, the sense of catharsis and relief is immense. You realise that the narrative was deliberately constructing all of those suspicious, uncomfortable elements only to dismantle and subvert them, ultimately leaving the reader with the right lessons.

The work, as you will ultimately appreciate, has consistently treated confused adolescents exploring their sexuality and boundaries as exactly that, it acknowledges mental health struggles with honesty and empathy without glamorisation or dismissal, and frames the consequences of inadequately supported neurodivergence with honesty and care. It neither invalidates anyone's reality nor does it excuse harmful behaviour or trivialises the struggles involved therein.

For me, the most gratifying part, especially after nearly giving up on it as yet another garbage romance, was how thoroughly it rejects the idea that bullshit philosophy that romantic love is inherently deeper, stronger, or more important than familial or platonic love. In fact, the story goes one step further and subtly argues the exact opposite. We realise that trying to force life into romance-driven expectations is what damaged these characters in the first place. Healing only becomes possible once they abandon that toxic philosophy and return to recognising and valuing their platonic and familial relationships. That reversal of expectations is so beautiful.

This is the kind of story where, on a first read, the unreliable narration will put you through a full enemies-to-lovers arc with the story. Only on a second read, armed with a clearer understanding of where things are headed, can you fully appreciate it. The soft, pretty art style and shoujo-ish pacing, combined with a heavy emphasis on smut, make its themes easy to overlook. Yet at its core lies a remarkably honest depiction of difficult process of growing up and maturing; the unease upon realising the world is more complex and more unpredictable than you were prepared for, making serious lapses of judgement out of immaturity and the slow, painful process of self-reflection and growth that follows.

Equally as sophisticated is its portrayal of mental health issues: the quiet, insidious way they take hold; the distress and desperation of the victims, the grief and helplessness you feel watching a loved one go through that, and the role of friends and family, a devoted, steadfast, and loving support system, in helping people survive and recover from such a dark affliction.

On your first read, you will curse this story until you’re about three quarters of the way through for being just another toxic romance, only to suddenly realise you’ve been pranked and that this is probably one of the most beautiful, most relevant friendship and family-focused stories you’ve seen in this genre in a while.

Platonic and family bonds are the star of this story. Despite technically being a romance, the driving relationships are about the family you have and the family you acquire. Haesu–Haemu’s flawless siblinghood, and Haemu–Seongchul’s and Doyoung–Hayes’ soulmate friendships, make me so emotional and happy. I'm absolutely in love with these relationships and they're completely responsible for dragging me along on the journey from "I'm gonna drop this story into the bin any time now" to "this is an excellent piece of literature that deserves a place of honour among my favourite shoujos of all time".

Icicle July 13, 2025 2:33 am

God, this will bore you out of your mind. Easily would be among the top contenders for the most gratuitous plot armour and the most shameless Mary Sue protag ever. And that's a tough accolade to achieve when you're competing against the glut of OP MC/regressor/Isekai which are themselves champions of the mindless wish-fulfillment for chuunibyou day dreamers category. Chuunibyou fantasies in shoujo are making their counterparts in shounen look like sober, serious, well written stories. I was prepared for mindless slop because that's what I've come to expect of modern shoujo (BL is a subcategory of shoujo) in general, and especially regressor type shoujos, but still I was impressed with how much worse it actually was.

The only saving grace of this story is that "I enjoy getting molested by a pedo catfish who used to be my father's classmate" idiot's dad and the first demon lord. Yang Sr. and that demon lord deserved a better story to feature in. They have far too much potential as antagonists to be wasted on that pet-fucking, trophy wife Mary Sue and his cult of "you looked at me and I was blessed" worshippers. Big demon lord should start calling the MC "Your Majesty" for he's been the emperor of the Mary Sues since the moment the author came up with his character. Honestly, everyone except those in the "good guys" troupe is a compelling character, since they actually seem to have a life and things to do unlike the protagonists who are just caricatures serving as the narrative's nepo babies. Delete the protagonist cast and that would immediately make the story magnitudes better. In order to tolerate this to the end, it would require an extreme level of obedience to the author's narrative on my part that is beyond my capacity for suspension of belief, therefore, I am going to have to drop it.

Oh, by the way, I should clarify for the sake of any potential garbage protectors who would like to latch on to the smell of "SJW bait" instead of focusing on actual arguments, look elsewhere. I called him that pedo medicine guy a catfish not because he crossdresses but because of his appearance as a minor being used to delude us into thinking that he is of a safe age to be hitting on an actual child. If he was actually drawn his age (not necessarily IRL compliant but atleast compliant to setting of that story of course) we'd all be immediately triggered to feel disgust and discomfort at the insanity that the narrative of the story is condoning and celebrating. What that bastard is doing is sexually engaging with a kid who is young enough to be his own child, and is actually the child of his friend and classmate. The author is catfishing us into thinking that it is okay for this old pervert to sexualize and be sexually involved with a child who reasonably should have been calling him uncle.

Can the ML just fuck off somewhere with the MC far away from civilization like right now and all the people around him can finally be free of this toxic, abusive asshole? And finally the author can go back to the drawing board and rewrite this to focus on fleshing out those bits of interesting plot we see from time to time instead of the only using it as bait to keep us hanging on while all we're gonna get is cheap romance and being repeatedly gaslighted into believing that the ML is a cool guy. Literally every other character is far cooler than this edgy, irresponsible, emo tween in the body of an adult old enough to be such tweens' dad while the author tries to convince us that emotional unstability, mood swings and disrespecting people around him makes him a hotshot.

Did the omega bitch just beat someone to death because they didn't think he was a good fuck? And people here still love him. Amazing. I mean, I have seen a lot of stories in this genre featuring people from military or criminal backgrounds, where they are expected to be violent and comfortable with assault and murder, but the main characters are never this unhinged. They are angry, violent, oppressive, will pummel people into the ground and murder whole families, but usually they have sober reasons for doing so. Because, they are supposed to be main characters at the end of the day. Sure, the standards in world they live is primitive compared to our normal world, but at within the limited moral framework that their world does have, they will not be classified as evil for the sake of it. People complain about toxic semes all the time, but I can't recall anyone as unstable and fucked up as this uke guy. At least, not anyone who is sane and in full control of his faculties. There a couple of ones like this who have the background of mystical possession, split personality and other such contrived plot reasons, but this guy hasn't got any excuse like that. I don't see how anyone can explain his behaviour even within the context of his background. This uke is fucked up on the same level as the cannon fodder random scoundrels that exist in yaoi just to be caricature villains. You know the ones that come in for a panel or two just to randomly SA the uke so you know how irresistibly hot he is and to give an opportunity for the seme to come in as the chivalrous knight and protect the chastity aka honour of the damsel (yeah, and this is a genre mostly written by women for women), thus convincing the uke to sign away his sexual freedom and become the seme's exclusive boytoy. It's incredible that this evil for the sake of evil uke is getting so much unquestioning sympathy and loyalty. Just because he takes it up the ass and whines about how tough his privileged life as a corrupt, organized crime boss is, apparently, makes him an innocent baby girl coded pookie in the eyes of the yaoi audience.

You don’t understand how hard a loss of a child is and how it can ruin somebody if you commented this. Fictional or not, he lost a child and lost everything in his life. The guy is unstable as hell, with trauma, unhealed trauma, and he was coping it with violence. It wasn’t justified but I understood why he crashed out like that. The betrayal, the loss, the heartbreak, the inability to be a normal person/omega, he was ruined inside, and you’re making a fuss over a man who pays very little to the plot. And to be honest if the alpha wasn’t a rude little bitch he wouldn’t have been killed. I say he deserves it lmfao that’d teach him to have manners. Alphas are put on too high a pedestal in the story anyway.

Can't understand what's so fun about these shallow Mary Sues that these stories have infested the entire artform. Honestly, children's cartoons are a hundred times better written than this crap. Author could've just made a little compilation of their character in cool outfits and cool poses and saved themselves thousands of pages of less than anime filler level crap.

There's no stake at all in this story. You can't bring yourself to care of any of these ridiculous caricatures and this frivolous frame to frame plot. All this is a devotional song, praising their darling MC for so much as breathing. Actual religious books are less cringe.

I read through more than 50 chapters of this waiting for the moment where I could actually start giving a shit about the plot. But, no, all I've felt over the last hour or so of reading this is the desire to see the entitled hypocrite bitch of an MC get pummeled into place.

Why are fully grown adults unironically writing and enjoying stories that even the edgiest of tween chuunibyous would feel embarrassed about? Do these authors really think that they can polish such barebones of a plot by simply taking what would have been a minor growth fodder arc villain in an actual manga and squeezing them into the role of a protagonist?

OP MC/transmigrator/regressor genre is the tiktok of the manga-manhwa-manhua world catering to as well as cultivating low attention spans and instant gratification addicts.

The french captain has become my favourite lead character from, I think, all BL as well as a lot of hetero and GL romances that I've come across in a while. Thanks for calling the purser guy out for having treated his late best friend disrespectfully and unfairly by viewing their friendship as inferior and inadequate to a romantic relationship, only useful if it served as a stepping stone to the romantic relationship he desired.

Barring some classic shoujo and shoujo ai and some newer ones which have carried on their essence, that are just absolute angels which depict romantic relationships in a healthy manner, where they respect the natural hierarchy of human relationships and harmoniously and synergistically coexist with familial and friendship bonds, romance genre is otherwise horrible with treating family and friendships with the respect they deserve. Romance genre is plagued with stories that keep depicting and validating toxic romantic relationships that try to denigrate people's familial and friendship bonds so that they can displace these central, more important relationships and usurp their position.

Trauma resulting from abuse almost always causes pathological tendencies and behaviour disorders. But, most afflicted are still able to remain functional and manage their issues a lot better than him, even without professional medical support. But this kid is too unstable and too dangerous to be left to his own devices. For his own safety and the safety of other people around him, somebody needs to drag that kid to a hospital. If he doesn't get the professional intervention he needs, he's on track to turn out exactly like the woman who abused him or worse and irreparably hurt many people along the way.

i agree with this person, i don’t think the story is realistic about what both of these boys have gone through.. with skylar it does seem like he has revived professional health to at least the degree of getting prescription drugs, but it doesn’t seem like therapy has been included? or if it has skylar pretty much refused all forms of help (hiding his pills instead of taking them, acting fine, hiding behind his glasses etc etc).

and with cirrus.. dude on top of being majorly emotionally neglected as a child, the teacher thing in third grade??? crazy shit that’s hard to overcome. cirrus is obviously dealing with a lot of mental health issues, and the fact that we go through this entire story without anyone trying to get him professional help is kinda nuts

I think u truly missed a lot of the plot points.

Skylar did go to therapy at the beginning of S1 and guess what? It was working for him and that’s why he stopped. Changes come from within in the first place if the person doesn’t work on themselves first, no therapy will help them.

Cirrus: so you think people cannot get over sexual trauma? or whatever u wanna call it? Cirrus’ main root of problems has always been the lack of emotional love coming from his father after his mom died. The incident with the teacher was just the cherry on top solidifying his thinking of not trusting any adults and starting to give himself a different personality in school. If u had read the latest chapters you would actually see that Cirrus let it go and he’s finally healing too. I actually liked very much how Prof Lee started taking care of him after Cirrus repeated his HS year and Cirrus leting him.

Thank you for actually reading the story the whole point of cirrus' story IS that he's neglected, nobody is gonna help him since there's nobody who knows he needs help (except Skylar). And even the act of getting professional help is unrealistic because many parents just don't go to those lengths for their child, whether that be for money reasons, personal beliefs, or even simply not caring enough. If you got help with your trauma and had attentive guardians then good for you, but it doesn't make the act of not getting help unrealistic

This site needs to start verifying ages properly and probably requiring a doctor's certificate even for legal adults showing that they are mentally mature and stable enough to be using this site. Because, why are some of the most horrific things being presented as normal and desirable in mainstream stories and people are lapping it up? What is this site? A place for pedos and creeps to mass groom young, stupid people? This fucking insanity should not exist at all or should be confined to the world of porn where it can be clearly distinguished that the characters are not representative of real humans but just fetish objects.

Aren't you the same audience that complains about the fact that Yaoi stories treat rape and sa casually and bemoan that the authors are so fucked up that they use rape and sa as romantic plot devices? I didn't realise that this site turns into mandatory moral education then. Be consistent. Either condemn everything problematic or go "artistic laissez faire" no matter what. The problem is that these stories are romanticizing pedophilia, grooming and pseudo-incestuous perversions and depicting them as normal, natural sexual behaviours, instead of just using them a ridiculous, exaggerated fetish device like outright porn does. It is the difference between an outrageous furry porn and someone writing a "romance" between a human and a dog as a serious story and the audience lapping it up and reacting to it the same way that they would to a sane romance, instead gagging and laughing at it.

And this is not just a one off story by one stupid deviant person. This is almost a whole goddamn genre of its own, to the point that it is getting noticeably harder and harder not to randomly run into a modern BL story that doesn't involve some old guy and someone that is much younger than him, whom he has known when they were a child, often someone whom he shared a pseudo-familial dynamic with, interacting in a manner that should get the older man thrown behind the bars for grooming a vulnerable, immature, confused young person, who is often emotionally and socially dependent on said groomer because of their original relationship with him, by initiating and/or encouraging sexual interaction and the kid, often a minor or young adult, should be getting checked into urgent medical psychological care. Instead, here, this highly dysfunctional, immoral, dangerous interaction is being romanticized and normalized and served to an audience that is chock full of readers from the age demographic that is most vulnerable to exactly the same kind of threats. These kids are reading these stories, not getting any cues from the story itself that this kind of behaviour is disgusting and dangerous, and then they come to comment section and all they see is people cheering for this perverted relationship as if it were any other romance story between mature, independent, consenting adult social peers.

Even those stories with rapey now, happily ever after plotlines are not nearly as dangerous of a slippery slope. Because SA is assault, and assault is violent. People usually can quickly learn to identify and get away from explicit violence. But, most importantly, anyone who may be enough of a gullible masochist idiot doormat to actually find the grapey to rosy plot progression cute will be shaken awake by the comment section awash with you guys clutching your pearls in horror over there. But, apparently, you people are suddenly too high brow and philosophical and eager to respect the sanctity of the fourth wall when it comes to offering your "readers added context" service for stories involving anything other than explicit, violent sexual assault.
