Can someone plz explain to me how people like this story? im genuinely confused because when i was reading this ages ago i was waiting for a long time for it to finally be as good as how people were describing it but i never felt it… Yuri is a total jerk basically the whole way through and that side couple was genuinely buns. this feels like the personification of “theyre bullying you because they like you!” because it basically is.

obviously, we all have different standards for the various elements of stories and value different things in those stories.
the creator's art skills kind of obscure the shallow writing, basically. the creator is good at conveying emotional drama and intensity, so people get immersed "in the moment" of genuinely interesting conflicts that make people want to see their resolutions (kind of like soap operas or certain tv dramas). maybe they don't see the gaps to begin with, or they're automatically filling them in themselves, but it evidently satisfies a lot of people. they're fine so long as the appropriate "beats" and milestones are reached and getting there is smooth enough. it's kind of the conundrum of visual narrative media, because you'll see this for movies and tv, too, where the visual and emotion-provoking experience is an essential part of the overall effect of the story, but it can override the more subtle and intangible aspects of the work that can take some thought and reflection to pick up and understand, which can be both a positive or a negative. if you read (or watch or listen) to stuff about writing as a craft, you might gain more insight about these things.
for me, the creator's artistic skill only makes the deficits of the (character/relationship, etc.) writing more glaring.
