In the case of the one shot I think people may be over simplifying this and probably because a lot of readers are straight women. Most queer teens experienced a hetero relationship before realizing they were gay or while still figuring things out. In the case of the one shot he was beaten by his brother for kissing a boy as a kid so obviously that’s going to cause some repression in terms of figuring out if you’re gay or even feeling like you can be gay. And based on the vibes here I’m guessing the girl asks him out, not the other way around. As a gay person with similar experiences I think this is a pretty reasonable depiction of being a gay teenager to include dating a person of the opposite sex. Sure it’s not great that you may date somebody who genuinely likes you that you come to realize you just can’t like back in the way they want you to. But in this case, I think it’s meant to be a depiction of a common gay experience rather than misogynistic plot device. I think it makes the work feel more grounded and realistic than a less serious BL where girls (and other guys) are used to push a couple together faster. I think her presence honestly doesn’t help push them together because it wasn’t that he started dating her and now the other guy is jealous and must confess. Rather he experiences trauma, his friend moved away, he moves on and tries to “be normal”, only for the old crush to return and motivate him to confront his feelings. But we will see how it plays out.
