Yup, in the coming chapters the monster attack continues, Barkas saves Ayla over Thalia (he has a reason but it might be too big of a spoiler?). Thalia becomes disabled (a leg injury) and as a consequence of failing his duties as a guard of the royal family Barkas' engagement to Ayla is broken and Thalia's mother proposes he marries Thalia instead cause "she's broken goods" and will have problems getting married now. He agrees.
Is the reason he protected Ayla due to what the previous empress did to him ? Not sure on the details please enlighten me
