A lot of people seem to be turned off or mildly amused by the ML. Personally, I like him. While he could have been a lot more honest, he made his intentions entirely clear to MC. I don't think he's obliged to do anything more than what he is doing.

I find it quite crazy that all of you are going ballistic about this. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate that so many people have been active in recognizing the harmful messages this story might send set in a such a difficult period with such oppressive systems. I also appreciate the humanity and compassion many have shown in regards to even subtle racist bigotry. I wish people were so understanding always.
However, I must say that this is quite hypocritical of many as well. There are many Yaoi stories on this beloved platform of ours that feature all kinds of troubling storylines. There is an insurmountable number of Yaoi stories and otherwise with all kinds of bigoted issues. There are many stories of relationships between slaves and masters. There are many stories about mlm relationships with power imbalances and heinous crimes like rape, murder, and/or torture. Some stories of note include "Taming the Tiger" and "Steel Under Silk." These feature slave x master relationships. But I do not see so many people criticizing these stories. I love "Taming the Tiger" and I'm sure many others do. Don't get me wrong in saying I defend the implications Jaxx's new story may be making, but I will point out this hypocrisy. I'm not trying to say that issue of slavery is slight and I very much see the possibility of white savior complex here. I've studied slavery's toll on people and I've seen just how absolutely cruel this time period has been. I see its widespread effects even now. I'm not trying the undermine the severity of this social issue and the oppressive systems that perpetuate it. But I will point out that other works that lack any sensitivity to relationships as complex as master X slave have not been as criticized as this one. I've seen the prevalence of black sexualization in Hentai, Josei, and the like. But I don't see so many people complaining there.
There are many stories set in ancient Korea with all kinds of complicated relationships and not many criticize these stories. Nobody pays so much attention to the sheer lack of insensitivity with Japanese/Korean/Chinese history. And nobody takes any notice when it's a Korean man with a white man. I find this a bit ridiculous. These histories are just as important as American history. I'm just saying that we all are jumping the gun too quickly. It's only been a prologue. We don't know what the author planned to do with this set-up. I will, of course, join everyone in criticizing Jaxx if they choose to continue the story with insensitivity given the backdrop. But the thing is: We just don't know what Jaxx plans to do. Jaxx has portrayed the White MC as a savior of the slaves. Of course, I see the scope for white savior complex. But the thing is, again: We don't know what Jaxx is going to do. I think it's a bit ridiculous to try control Jaxx's creative direction. If they choose to portray a white man as a savior during the 1860s, that's their choice for the story. What they choose to imply or do after making this creative choice is what we, as readers, should be analyzing critically. Not the creative choice itself. I agree that the "you guys are being too sensitive" comment is insensitive. But I also think everyone accusing each other of being racist in the comment section is ridiculous. I think Jaxx is being unfairly criticized for a creative choice they are at liberty to make as a creator. But I will say, that what Jaxx chooses to do after making this choice and the level of sensitivity with which they regard this difficult historical period should be analyzed critically, and if necessary criticized, by us as readers. You can clearly tell in this comment section alone that these people do not know about the american slave trade nor the history of Native Americans and Black people in America. This BL would probably be the introduction of many to this so its important to emphasise an accurate and respected story.
Having a story that centres around real world history is different to a fictional slave/master relationship, their pain and hurt are purely fictional. However, with this story, it has to represent the pain and hurt respectfully since there are real victims of it. Its not hypocritical, fictional settings allow us to distance ourselves from reality, however when that fictional borrows from reality to the point its recounting history, thats where care needs to be put in the story.
And with the Ancient korean historical ones youve mentioned, it is their history they chose to represent and tell, I am not one to speak about it. But one thing I'll let you know, I've never seen a BL of a Japanese imperial officer and a Korean, its distasteful and Im sure even if one does exist and is popular, then there would be heavy backlash against it, which i would support

It's a pretty typical smut story for the male gaze. The girl's a bimbo and is a total klutz. I assure you no woman is so comfortable, inviting, or vulnerable in a public space. It is a very delusional portrayal of a woman and her circumstances. In any world this is considered workplace sexual harassment. I can't really blame the men too much in this story for their response to incidents where she's totally vulnerable (I've only read 2 chapters, so I'm not sure about the rest of the comic). I will blame the author for their portrayal of her as such a klutz who gets herself stuck in extremely vulnerable and sexual positions that need her to rely on other men. No women would willfully ever get into such situations if she can help it. I also found the sorry excuse of the friend forcing her to wear a bikini ridiculous. Was the author so damn lazy they couldn't think of anything better? The other work by this author is leagues better than this slop. Even if the girl was somewhat a nympho, I do not hate the portrayal of her as a "slut." I fucking hate this word. I just hate this author's extremely unrealistic portrayal of a woman. There's no problem with big-breasted women. Big breasts do not make a woman any more clumsy or inviting. But this DELUSIONAL portrayal of her as someone who's so easy to take advantage of and as someone who has no caution in any matter is ridiculous. I also don't like that she doesn't have to work hard in her career just because she's pretty. I mean, sometimes, this is the unfortunate reality in many workspaces. However, the opposite has proven to be true in many workspaces too. Women are harassed and overworked in many cases. I just hope no one misunderstands that all women will feel gratitude and happiness at the prospect of working less just because she's pretty. This shouldn't be seen as a privilege for women. It's often a "privilege" granted with expectations of something in return. I don't know what is it with these writers and why its such a common thing to use tropes like emasculated men. I thought yaoi was made for women by women. So why is it that emasculating men is such a common theme in omegaverses? This trope becomes especially dangerous when you pair it with skewed power dynamics. The ML who's clearly older, richer, more privileged, and has more access versus the MC who doesn't have any of this. I've read up to chapter 8 with great difficulty. I don't mean to discourage anyone who likes this. I just personally find this story to be a heap of drivel. I also think it's very important to point out the damage these tropes can do to readers subconsciously. Although I understand the trope of emasculated men might be fulfilling to many women in a vengeful sense given the toll of centuries worth of patriarchy on so many women. It might be satisfying to many to watch men suffer through this horrible system women do. But I still think the theme of picking on emasculated men in stories like this one has a pretty pernicious implication that femininity equals weakness. This is SO NOT TRUE obv. And I understand that emasculated men is a pretty vague term. I also understand that there are men who are naturally more feminine in stature or are drawn to activities like cross-dressing in many beloved stories on this platform. I don't mean these lovely men. What separates this genre of emasculated men (as seen in the MC here) from the men who are naturally more feminine or drawn to femininity? I think the answer is presentation. This story is about an MC who has barely any personality beyond his feminine looks, traits, and innocence. It's a story about him being taken advantage of people and systems who exploit these traits. The stories about the men who are naturally more feminine or drawn to femininity instead imbue a lot of personality into these men. Some are innocent, some are naive, and some are rambunctious and witty. Either way, they are not some blank pretty face and generally the stories have more nuance in how they represent their struggles and lives. Sorry about this one guys, I know it was damn long. I don't mean to police your thoughts. I thought I should share this so that the people who find this kind of story off-putting and can't put their finger on why would may be able to perhaps understand why a bit more. (￣∇￣")
