It might be a cultural thing. Homosexuality is only starting to be socially acceptable in a lot of places, so that might be a reason. It hasn't even been that long in western cultures to get away from a heteronormative view on queerness either, I remember ppl asking queer couples about who's the man in the relationship more than once

no this is EXACTLY the reason and what i say all the time. a big issue with queer media written by straight women is they still like the relationship to function within the parameters of heteronormativity. one is the man and one is the woman, end of story.

Doesn't help that the main target audience is also straight women, I've seen more than enough comments over all the bl's over the years complaining if we have a manly looking bottom or a top that's shorter than the bottom. And I can imagine that sentiment is even stronger in Korea, where the main audience for these publishers is, once again because the queer movement has still a longer way to go than in the west.

But yeah, at least there's more unconventional yaoi coming out lately. I've seen a trend for buff bottoms and short tops, so fingers crossed the next trend is vers couples and unconventional (conventional irl) couples.

yeah i do think that a large part of the strict positions has to do with the fetishization some female authors have towards queer characters, like one has to be "masculine" and another has to be "feminine". like you said, a lot of authors probably do this because they live in extremely conservative countries so ig its engraved in their heads that relationships need a fixed top and bottom. it does irck me sometimes but also considering the kind of country the authors live in, it cant rly be helped
