in chapter to on the last page when the guy says "stead" (pronounced stee-d rather than sted) he means "in place of" and it is not a grammatical error that was supposed to say instead (although I will argue that 'instead' would've made more sense for the character, considering stead is formal english and the story is making out the guy to be some sort of barbarian. Unless they're trying to suggest that he isn't a barbarian or at the very least not as barbaric as the rest of the group, then it would make sense)
