I can understand being disappointed that you won't get to see a character with a similar background to you in a story. I simply don't understand why expressing that disappointment has to involve portraying and stereotyping the people who raised issues with this story as oversensitive white people with no issues of their own. I only found out about this from other Black people on social media who were also skeptical about how the story would handle the history and racial dynamics of it. simply having characters of color isn't enough. the story context and how those characters are portrayed also matters. if you didn't see an issue with this story, that's your prerogative, but being chill with everything doesn't mean that you're the sole voice of reason either. what makes sensitivity bad? what if other people are sensitive for good reasons, and other people are numb and indifferent for bad reasons?

it's also suspicious to me whenever someone is willing to tokenize themselves as the one person of their group to validate whatever take/position goes against the one held by most or a significant majority of the group they belong to. it can be a profitable position for the one willing to do that because they get to cozy up to the powerful/dominant party, but it comes at the expense of their own community. what do you get from being "one of the good ones (who don't rock the boat and aren't noisy about race)"?

many people raised their concerns and the creator either agreed with the points made, or simply didn't want to deal with continued scrutiny. they could have continued despite the reaction, as many creators do. either way, this creator isn't the champion against the oversensitive mob some of you want them to be. and this isn't the story they needed to release with a burning passion, otherwise they could release it (even for free!) even amidst the outcry, as some people want. either the oversensitive mob made good points that made them reconsider, or the oversensitive mob are better spenders than the racially rough-and-tough and the creator doesn't want to alienate a potential market. one way or another, there's value in the opinions of the oversensitive mob, according to the creator. so what is railing against the oversensitive mob going to do about that, apart from venting your feelings?

People are allowed to criticize a story they find offensive. That’s not the same thing as “harassment.”

If a story builds a romance around a Black slave and a white master using a real history of slavery, people are naturally going to have strong reactions. That’s a predictable consequence of choosing such a sensitive subject.

The author also had every right to withdraw the project if they didn’t want to deal with the backlash. That was their decision. But readers also had every right to say they found the premise offensive. Criticism isn’t censorship just because you disagree with it.

No one is entitled to a positive reception, especially when a story uses a real history of racial oppression as the foundation for a romance. Freedom to create also means people are free to criticize what you create.

They pretend to respect opinions, but when people disagree, they act like they have the entitlement to make demands, regurgitating the same argument over and over. As if they couldn't just ignore it and leave it to the people who actually have the capacity to understand and realize that not everything is black and white. They're also asking for the first chapter to be deleted and dare to say that's not censorship.
If you're thin-skinned and lack the resilience to even grasp the idea of a possible fictional story about an interracial couple set in a time of slavery, then you should shut your mouth and go to therapy instead of complaining.

But publicly criticizing a story, refusing to support it, or organizing a boycott because people find the premise offensive isn’t automatically censorship. Consumers have always been free to decide what they do or don’t want to support.

And the issue was never “an interracial couple.” Most people weren’t objecting because the couple was interracial. They were objecting because the romance centered on a master/slave relationship rooted in a real history of racial oppression. Those are two very different things.

If this had simply been an interracial romance in the 19th century, there likely wouldn’t have been the same level of backlash. The controversy came from using a system of slavery and colonial oppression as the backdrop for the romance, not from interracial love itself.

You don’t have to agree with that criticism, but dismissing everyone who disagrees as “needing therapy” doesn’t address the actual concerns people raised.

And of course, criticism is welcome, but that's not all they did. Do you read through your own butt cheeks?
