Author did a great job of building the relationship between these two.
I can empathise with the MC.. having trauma from one of my parents growing up, it screws up your understanding of love. Not just Love in the romantic sense, but also familial, friendships, and self love. Everything gets tossed in a blender and it takes a LOT of patience and devotion and support to start putting those pieces back together.
