We see it as pride because having pride is linked to having self respect and consciousness of one's dignity. Literally similar terms to one another.

Ur second sentence kinda threw me off, because a person with pride would strive to earn money in a proper way because they won't resort to actions that will strip off their moral dignity just to earn money.

And a normal person with self-respect won't be staying in a one-sided relationship and getting into bed with them in the pretext of being fuck buddies to satisfy their one-sided affection. So would you say he has no self-respect? I think we can say he is a mess instead.
