The storys pretty guessable so yeah he was probably not expecting it and prolly regretted leaving her alone. I can guess he never even geniunely hated her but was just petty about something that happened decades ago. Im guessing the saint/someone from the imperial palace wanted her dead. Also he might have also been the one to turn back time. And he mightve also gone crazy after her death. Holy its so fking dull and repetetive.
