Im not arty but i guarantee theyre mainstream because of the "dark romance" shit. It's them romanticising and fetishizing rape, kinks basically. Literally those who comments "wheres the sex" in random BL stuff with no sex scenes.
Majority of their fandom are also people/mostly women who LOVES objectifying gay/lgbtq. The fujoshis who just ship any guys who looked at eachother for 3 seconds & the ones who comment disgusting shit like "yaoi", "we know whos the bottom/top" under a post with actual living people yet claims they support equality for lgbtq people

For me i just look at the overviews, look online, or just read the first chapter of a story. If it interests me then I'll read it.
Also in response to these ^ I actually believe a lot of the people who read these types of stories are young and haven't been in real relationships. Those of us who are old enough, understand what love and dedication really mean (not lust) maybe have gone through sexual assault/harassment ourselves and have triggers around it... We're just too old for stuff like that? Who knows, maybe it's also a way for some people to project their own traumas, people who are far from the LGBTQ community so can't relate to the characters and don't feel bad projecting this stuff onto queer characters.. truly I don't know for sure. I also think sites like Lezhin push these stories to the front page. But I actually think on the official sites there's more accountability and less simping over black flag characters. I think there is a younger population of readers who come to illegal sites like these because they don't have their own money yet, and these are the readers who understand important issues less. I read most of my stuff on Lezhin and commenters there seem on the whole more concerned about romanticised rape. But I agree this whole thing is sad and I hate it, which is why I'm determined to spread the word about all my favourite manhwas and promote authors who don't sexualise abuse <3
I meant *dark heaven and guardians of the lamb. Genuinely two of the most brilliant stories ever told in visual format. This stuff IS dark and does contain dark topics but it sure as hell ain't brushed over, and it's not done between the main characters, it's awful people in the world subjecting the characters to trauma. It's really got heartwarming endings despite the dark topics, tho
