im so tired of trying to find any reason to root for jingi and myeongil to be together. i thought now that we have the hyeonjae deciding to kill him he would actually become a love interest and act accordingly. but nope hes still SAing myeongil no remorse no nothing. sure i empathise with his abuse but that doesnt make his actions at all okay. he seems to be starting to like myeongil and i thought hed slowly start getting likeable or something.
now hyeonjae deciding to kill his brother is bad and a betrayal and hes actually obsessed with myeongil, but at least hes now respecting myeongils wishes, not touching or kissing him. like bare minimum, but compared to jingi, hyeonjae is a saint right now.
it seems like theyre setting up jingi and myeongil to be the endgame couple and im so confused as to how it will be even remotely good or compelling. like how am i supposed to dislike the guy whos actually interested in myeongil and wants to give him anything and everything, not touching him without consent and supposed to like his rapist. i just don't get it, like yes jingi clearly likes myeongil in some way but hes still doing this shit!
can someone please explain why they like jingi/think hed make a compelling or good couple with myeongil without just excusing his actions?
I feel like you're defining likeable as morally good/correct or being good to the love interest. Characters are plenty likeable despite what they've done, are doing, or will do just based on the reader's personal taste. Aside from that, I don't think the author's specifically trying to make you root for one or the other here or to make one character likeable. I've always thought it was more about showing how Myeongil's feelings change and how they are affecting his choices.
Now, I wouldn't say I particularly like Jingi, but he's my favorite because of his personality and the drama he creates. I actually severely dislike Hyeonjae just because he's possessive and we've already seen how he hurts the people he "loves".
Also, I don't think they're setting Jingi up to be endgame. Like, I wish that were the case, but in the beginning it felt more like he was the love interest than now.
thank you for the insightful answer! i wouldnt say im necessarily conflating good moraly and likeable, but i need something to make up for it personally. for example i like ilay from passion more than jingi despite both SAing the mc bc ilay loves tay and is seeking for a way to connect, but doesnt know how to without sex. i think jingi in comparison is unlikeable (to me) bc hes done it to others (the beads etc).
i mean from my question you can probably tell but i certainly hope jingi x myeongil is not endgame bc i like hyeonjae more lmao
in the end i guess it does come down to personal taste, cause to me hyeonjaes possessiveness and love for myeongil comes across as more romantic than whatever jingi has going on (comparatively)

Personally I like the push/pull slow burn of Jingi/Myeongil more than Heonjae/Myeongil. I can't get behind the latter because while Heonjae claims he's trying to be better for Myeongil, he's also being manipulative in the background to keep Myeongil in his orbit (leaving Jingi to die in the medical tent, making deals with uncle to kill Jingi in exchange for building a post-prison life with Myeongil which the latter has no clue about, making Jingi push Myeongil to move to Heonjae's room, making sure the work schedules include only him+MI). Also can't forget what HJ did to his last love

i feel like recently second leads get put to the side so much theres no point in even pretending that theres a chance hell get chosen, but raonhiljo was such a good love interest especially when compared to the ml
