There is something to appreciate about the way this genre has manufactured and capitalized on characters as labels. If you need a recommendation you can simplify it into two words, #AdjectiveBottom and #AdjectiveTop. I have for the longest time found series that I enjoyed and loved in this way and is by no means bad nor an indication of quality.. sorta until it borders into caricatures.

To simplify what I'm getting at if it isn't obvious yet. Happy Together breaks that ceiling, Will you label Jaeyoung as #QuietBottom or will you label Seungmin as #CoolTop? Many have added nuance to characters they've written throughout my time with this genre but none come close to feeling like real actual tangible people. Jaeyoung isn't defined by his role in the relationship and not does Seungmin. They're defined by the actions taken upon them and actions they're taking for the betterment of the other.

We see them joke around, function sexually like actual couples and most of all.. they are intimate in ways NO OTHER COUPLES I've seen have been. There's been dialogues yes, a showcase of profound change after being an asshole but no other series makes it explicitly clear that these people care about one another beyond their attraction.

Seungmin and Jaeyoung feels like they function OUTSIDE of their relationship as a couple, It's a huge plot glue don't get me wrong but they're not centered or defined by it like most other series are, Their relationship is a portion of the things that make who they are and the actions and decision they make. Jaeyoung isn't going into this because he's feeling things for Seungmin, He's doing it because he genuinely loves performing and Seungmin isn't working against Jaeyoung's autonomy with his wishes and plans.

This is only the surface, I can go on and on about how stellar the pacing has been for a weekly release, There's a rhythm to it that feels almost cinematic and not just panel-y and that takes incredible precision. The writing is phenomenal and each side characters feel just as alive as the leads. It's a small thing but when most of what you read here feels like the same thing in a different coat, Happy Together breaks boundaries and shows the quality we could get from serious artistic finesse.

You root for these characters not because the plot tells you to but because there's risks involved and there's a possibility of a setback that can come from an interaction with the overarching antagonist and you will not get that on any other series because most of the time.. what you read in BL? The ML is as much the villain until the story needs him to become the lover instead.

If he was an X-Men he would be an omega level mutant lmao

I'm tweaked, he lived ALONE in the mountains, was living off there enough by stealing from BANDITS and TRAVELLERS, was living alone UP AND DOWN a MOUNTAIN, but the moment the story starts he's a dimwitted fucktard who can't help but be clumsy, can't fucking run on the same mountain and forest he's known all his life, can't do proper chores he should have been doing LIVING ALONE IN A MOUNTAIN. Like are we serious? Is this worth reading? I'm actually genuinely asking because I can push through if it's just for the "character development" sake but I'm seriously tweaked by how idiotic of a writing choice it is to have a kid who lived alone UP the mountain in a home with his mom who passed early be written like he's a sheltered retard is fucking insane to me.

everyone in this story seems to be suffering from a combination of Stupiditis and For4Plot

I'm not comparing the two really but going from reading the first season of Happy twogether to this was so stark and a whiplash I'm crying LMAOAOAOAOAOA I literally cannot get over the confusion rooting in my head with every new chapter I read it's not that this is bad, it's a fun read, I had my chips and my music on while reading this so I enjoyed it regardless cause I knew what I was coming to but it was still such a drastic change in pacing, mood and characterization that I can't actually wrap my head around it

The only place I need that crazy blonde to be going is in jail and not redeemed through a second love interest because holy fuck?????

damn created a topic of High School Salty Heart

I grew up watching telenovela shows and the dramas, I'm basically getting that right now cause wdym a knock up? a male lead who doesn't want the MC romantically? BABY COMING? DRINK SPIKING? CRAZY SABOTEUR???? THIS IS TELENOVELA BABYYY

I LOVEEEEEE MY BABBYYYYY he's practically a social disaster and I loooove that holy fuck, my cutiepatootie, I'm actually gonna need jaeyi to move, we gotta switch ideum is too fucking pretty for him #HesMine #AlphaANON

No offense, Kael was a fine option but he felt like a punching bag for the plot low-key it delegated him so bad to the second male lead roles that at some point I just felt bad that the 'fate' (bad writing) just favored Carsen more.

He didn't even have a happy ending I'm crying that man said "Goodbye, My Maythan" and never moved on which was clear when we found out Kael's strong feeling is enough to influence his souls like I'm sooooo sorry, Cedric was also delegated to a bit character despite being one of the male leads and his thing was literally just being a Cuck.

Not worth it, Yujin is a fucking doormat I do not care and will not listen to anyone else otherwise; You might think he's being "Oh wow, he's so strong going through this" but no, he's barely shown any fucking agency nor actual personality other than his qualms with money, daughter, the family and his past it's actually insane how bland a character gets when they just serve as a plot device mind you as a MAIN CHARACTER.

"Let me go" and bitch ass was wiggling his fucking shit around literally stand the fuck up. Writing pathetic bitches for the sake of it is sooooo tired; this is depression porn bro, there is literally no other explanation.

sister.. u didn't have to end him like that

damn created a topic of Struggle

crazy take but Muchan deserved better, out of all the cookie cutters he atleast had some edges to him that was interesting and having him be used as a way for MC to proudly realize his feelings for ML is low-key ass for me, the kid was obviously a fucking idiot and assaulting someone definitely got him on mc's hit list so I'm not surprised they're aggressive with one another

But... At the same time, he atleast had multitude and could have actually been a really good character study through the hands of another writer, cause he's hypocritical and he's also self ware that he's shitty and like I feel for that, because he is shitty and he is hypocritical and he doesn't make excuses for it infact he leans into it and acts like an ass by choice cause he knows deep in his heart... The author will never give him a break from his feelings LMAOOOO

At this economy idc if he's as much as a raging asshole like ML, if you offer me to stay at a barchelor's pad tax free and you're getting groceries paid easily I'm fucking in. I will be putting up with all these bs tremendously and more LMAOOOOO

damn created a topic of Precious Thing

dropping this on ch4, not because it's so ugh so toxic ugh so ugh ugh, I'm not prudish, I grew up with Killing Stalking in my back pocket, Its because I have never had such repulsion from the dialogue and scene choices.

Not because they're bad, hell I like a little spanking, I like a little crazy in my male leads but "you mad bro?" Or "little Chihuahua"??????? Why are we talking like a D-List Streamer or a redditor? I really don't mind stories like this but that was the quickest writing ick I ever had LMAOOOO like it has potential but I can't take the writing seriously when it's given with these dialogues and framing.

Art's not that bad though! this just wasn't in my cup of tea

damn created a topic of My Beloved Oppressor

Catherine low-key the MVP, the goat, I'm so sad she died and I wish Annette had more scenes with Olivia since she's technically her god daughter at this point.

Without Catherine's presence, Annette wouldn't have had the safe space to grow that allowed her to be pushed into her own path. They were my favorite part of the series and I'm so gutted they only had a few chapters together because it's so exceedingly rare (to me) in this genre for the plot to be pushed through by both female characters that isn't a plot device (e.g., side char is jealous of mc or stuff like that) it really gives both characters agency and chemistry as actual friends.

Actually istg Annette needs a circle of friend bad come here pookie I'll take care of you too

damn asked a question

Recently I've been getting into reading a lot more contemporary fiction rather than YA (No, Colleen Hoover though.. I avoid her works) and the main difference is a focus on the MC herself for most of what I read like Her Hidden Genius by Marie Benedict or Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus (which mind you is wrongly marketed and underrated)

I wanted to know if you guys know of manwhas or mangas, I don't mind if it's Isekai or the usual Slice of Life I just need the FL to have some sort of agency to the story, Not that she's badass and perfect but more so that her actions affects both her and the people around her instead of 'plot' convenience or atleast one where the FL doesn't just talk to the ML and the problem is fixed out of her accord cause like what was the point then. </3
