I don't think lgbtq is a taboo topic for kids, honestly if anything kids should be educated about Lgbtq more. I've seen many parents complain about Lgbtq topics in schools and i don't agree with them, Lgbtq kids suffer bullying etc from other kids who very simply don't understand. As someone who can't go outside my options are quite limited that's why i went with writing since I did well with my English exams and have done writing pieces before so I thought why not reply
As a Non-binary myself i would suggest seeing how you feel having people calling you they/them and how you feel looking more androgynous if that's what you want obviously, but at the end of the day it can take a long time to figure out your gender and you don't even need to label it just be you and do what makes you happy reply
