Two things can be true at once. You can’t be mad at Maxi for standing up for herself and finding purpose in her life, but you also can’t be mad at a man who only wants to protect his wife and give her the soft life she deserves

Riftan doesn't love Maxi, he loves the thought of her. Maxi doesn't want a "soft life", she's been locked up her whole life and he knows this but he still refuses to let her finally experience the world to learn and grow. Riftan "loved" Maxi before ever interacting with her. He also fell in love with her when he was a teen and she was a child, so the image he has of her is really just some adorable child he's never interacted with and he decided that he was going to spoil one day.
You can’t say he doesn’t love her. There are plenty examples of him showing that he does. The better choice of words would be he isnt loving Maxi the way she wants to be loved. Again two things can be true at once. This relationship is full of growing pains for the both of them. Also we have to remember the time/society they live in. While we may hate it this is how men treated women back then even the ones with good intentions.
Another 2 things can be true at once moment. I feel so bad for both of them.
