I think the author was trying, but man do the misconceptions really shine. Like someone that's fed up with racism being rampant in America is not going to have any expectations for the cops to still be good. Fuck them pigs.
The racism and stuff in this is really annoying and rubs me the wrong way most of the time( ̄ー ̄) At least Ryo is understanding and doesn't say weird racist shit. Dee needs to stfu tho. As far as Bikky and his hair goes I don't think the author knows how mixed people work lmao Σ('◉⌓◉’) Using that as an example, it honestly gets to a point where it's just so bad it's kind of funny I am sad to say Like my gay ass is laughing my ass off a little bit about the idea of a ten year old calling a cop a faggot ʅ

I’m always a sucker for this type of “old” style manga. And each frame always tend to have deeper and detailed drawing that pulls you in. With small interactioj in the background with dialogue that could progress so much later. This one is amazing read and I enjoyed it very much. I didn’t expect my crackship of Drake and JJ would be possible ahahaha. I love Ryo so much and Dee is such a silly simp(he’s more than that), Bikky and Ryo’s bond is so heartwarming too. Although I do have things I’m not a fan of from the manga, It is still very well written. ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
But an important note is probably that there's a lot of police brutality going on and eh, I just think some ppl might not like it. Also that extra incest, murder and sht case is so fked up I-- I expected Ryo to be a more depressed character but whoa. WHOA.
I think it’s ok to like Fake while also acknowledging police brutality. Especially for the 90s, it’s far from the most problematic detective/cop story I’ve seen. Though that’s not a very high bar. Spoilers—like I think it’s v good that Dee and Ryo go out of their way to stop each other from pulling their guns on people that have really hurt/killed people they love. There’s a lot of other issues that the manga brings up and doesn’t ignore(racism, bi/homophobia, “good/bad” cops, and like you said...Ryo’s mental health? lmao), but still need to be presented in more depth. + the occasional randomly drawing guns, punching (albeit with no intention to kill and guilty suspects) and certain jokes are something to consider. Fake will always be one of my favorite bl mangas of all time, I love the story and characters too much, but I’ve also become more critical since the first time I read it. Yikes this was really long sorry~~~

No prob no prob I consider myself really accepting of all kinds of BLs Lately, a lot of BLs don't address the common things more in western settings, perhaps because ppl are more sensitive to those things. But homophobic, sexist, racist comments are still common!
Oh yeah for sure. These things are still as real as they were then so more nuance on the topics is always nice. I guess I try to be open too, I also constantly read stuff that doesn’t talk about anything too deep or triggering to stay sane lol
