I think the danger lies in people not recognizing or acknowledging the fact that yaoi is ultimately porn. I've had people on this very site tell me that it is art or a story when I argued that yaoi is porn and that all porn fetishizes sex, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. This may be a slightly less popular opinion but I will give my 2cents as a queer man. If we are talking yaoi specifically : There is always something fetishistic about smut. Shounen ai? Generally less sex focused, so there is a less of that in my experience.
