I think it helped me when I was a budding pansexual in high school. But as I've gotten older my relationship with BL has gotten more complicated - there are some very troubling themes in BL that come up over and over again that I feel like can stereotype/belittle the LGBT community in bad ways.

It doesn't effect me. In my eyes, I'm simply reading a dramatic story. I certainly can't speak for others, but if works of fiction, like BL and yaoi effect your preferences/sexual identity in any way, you need to reevaluate yourself. I had some very unsavoury run ins with fujoshis when I was younger and any BL I saw, was cringey, rapey, abusive, gross and so so fake. It made me hate myself more and deepened my internalised homophobia.

The only gay (well bi but he says he leans more to the gay side) guy I know is just like your average guy. I completely understand that yaoi is just a fantasy, and in real life people don't exist like that.
