Why do people put 'power' in words like [insert n-word] and [insert gay f-word slur]?
I'm genuinely curious as to why people put so much 'power' into these two words. I mean if we hadn't put any meaning behind, them no one would have to be offended. We wouldn't have to care if we were called them, because at the end of the day, they're just two words said by people.
I mean sometimes in songs, there are people who would say them because it's not really directed towards anyone. However, sometimes when I've others say the [n-word] or the [gay slur] people go off on them.
Yeah, I understand that people now and of the past were called this, but if we just stopped putting meaning and 'power' behind it, it would just be a word among other words.
But just curious though: Why do people put 'power' in words like [n-word] and [gay f-word slur]?
Bro I'm sorry but this is so stupid. Like seriously? Sure, this "they're only words/a string of letters" can work for cuss words like fuck, shit, ass, etc. but it's literally IMPOSSIBLE to use the n-word or the f-word slur without certain meaning. You either: are a black person who uses it kinda synonymous to "bro" or you're a non-black person who ...... 2 reply
Uh? We're reclaiming those words because racists, for example, won't just stop using those slurs with the original meaning racists have given them. Are you aware that most of the lgbt+ terms were slurs? Bi was a psychological disorder. Slurs aren't slurs because they "offend" people, they're slurs because they carry centuries of pain, suffering and...... 1 reply
Because history. You can't magically make words associated with years of ridiculing a minority be socially acceptable just because "at the end of the day they're just two words", shit doesn't work like that. Just don't use those words in the first place, problem solved no brainwashing technology needed. 1 reply
I think the centuries of oppression that follow those words, is what offends people and ignoring that wouldn't fix the problem. As a black person, When someone not of colour says it usually not all innocent or nice it's usually Somone know how much pain the word can cause when they say it and delibertly say it. But I can Kind of see what you're try...... 2 reply
Long story short, the n-word and f slur both have years and years of history behind them that make it offensive to the minorities it's directed to. And I'd say that it's hard to just take away the power the word has since you can't decide what a minority group finds offensive or not offensive. It's still disrespectful for them basically. reply
Lmao why does it sound like you want to say the words
You also literally called them slurs so I suggest you look up the definition of "slur" because that might answer your question 2 reply
