A mini thing I wanted to say before I sleep since it’s been bothering me
So I wanted to state my opinion here...
I, as a woman who reads yaoi, don’t like how others use the statement “yaoi was made for women”. It’s just wrong to say that. It’s a really shitty thing to say when the relationships in yaoi are about the romance between 2 men.
I just didn’t really want to comment on these topics because seeing homophobic and mysogynistic comments as a young bisexual girl just disheartens me...
I just really wanted to say this. I hope this doesn’t get deleted and my account won’t get restricted. Gn you guys.
Also, if you guys want to have discussions, please be respectful... I don’t wanna see a full on war.. that would make me sad :((
in the end, it's really about not taking fiction as reality. You can read yaoi bit you NEED to know that there is a huge difference between a real life gay relationship and a yaoi gay relationship. 1 reply
Honestly it really depends on the yaoi. Like- it really really depends on the yaoi.
Wait I should clarify lmao. I thought you were asking why people say yaoi is catered towards women. And honestly some yaoi is catered towards fujushi's because that's where the market is? I mean, it's easier for straight women to say they like bl than for a guy to ...... reply
Just wanted to state that the premise of yaoi being between men, does not mean the story is or isn't aimed at females.
ofc the target audience is exactly that, the target. All are welcome to enjoy the media they enjoy most.
Like with all fiction, if the audience enjoy themselves without it incorrectly influencing their non-fictional views/stereoty...... reply
I wanna make myself clearer bc I’ve been stalking my topic (lmao) for a while since I can’t sleep.
It isn’t that I don’t know that yaoi was first made for women, I just feel sad when fellow women who read yaoi gatekeep gay men from the genre... same with some other stuff... I genuinely think all genres, no matter what they are, are to be ...... 1 reply
The target audience for yaoi is women, actually I'm pretty sure yaoi is a subgenre of shoujo. Bara's target audience is gay men. But of course, that's just who it's marketed to. Just like how shounen is 'for young boys', etc. It's just the target demographic, you can like whatever genre you want. reply
it's not exactly wrong to say that "yaoi" boys love or whatever you want to call it is aimed at women, because it is. When people make and write yaoi usually their target demographic is Women. Which is a whole nother problem in itself, seeing as theyre profiting off of mlm/nblm for straight womens money and enjoyment. It shouldn't be for women, it ...... 2 reply
I don't know whether I understand your point so feel free to correct me. But if you go back to how the yaoi genre came to be, yaoi or BL (boy's love) is actually really catered for women by women. Majority of the first yaoi pieces(manga/manhwa/LN) were created by women (and majority are still by women). It's not entirely wrong to say because that's...... 1 reply
I mean for me it’s on discussion like this I don’t have much to say. Because I am a non binary bisexual. I hate the the way yuri is set towards the male gaze that I don’t even try to look for them but I hate the hate I get for reading Yaoi. So I end up reading straight shit. So yeah reply
As a gay guy, yaoi is literally made for the consumption of women primarily. And that's not a bad thing. Gei Comics/Bara are made for the consumption of gay men primarily.
It's not a big deal.
Edit: this isn't to say those outside of these groups can't consume these medias, just that they are the primary target audience for marketing and such 1 reply
