Yaoi was my first introduction to anime, If I remember. Its when I started to learn more about lgbt and i wanted to readwatch stories that was lgbt. I actually only watched Yaoi before I found out there were webcomics I could read pff. Before then I never bothered with anime. I believe this was when I was around 9? I was a early starter.
