is it ok to separate art from artist?
this is mostly about music artists, but this also applies to everything that requires creativity (movies, art, writing, etc.) there are many extremely problematic people out there who make some GOOODD music, but i often feel conflicted on whether or not i should listen to them. take kanye for example, he genuinely makes amazing songs, but he's also a white supremacist and neo-n@zi. i don't listen to him anymore since i don't fw that, but there are some that still support/defend him. some people believe it is possible to appreciate the artistic work separately from the artist's personal life or actions, while others feel that supporting a problematic artist may condone or enable their behavior. ultimately, it's a personal decision and can depend on various factors, including the severity of the artist's problematic actions and individual beliefs. so im just asking this question to see answers from different people.
I just don't give a fuck because, at the end of the day, I'm gonna listen to whatever resonates with me not what person. I hate how Doja Cat, mindless self-indulgence, and Ayesha erotica are but I don't idolize them or say they're my favorite artists. That is why I always say "my favorite song" because I don't know or care about the person, but res...... reply
well i can't speak for everyone but if i found out someone did or does something that's shit, i just can't interact with them anymore. my brain doesn't want to support the artist, even if my absence is insignificant to them it makes me feel good knowing im no longer supporting them. reply
i skimmed the comments and other people are giving sorta shitty and irresponsible responses so here's mine. i hope it'll be actually helpful!
i think it depends. i think that to be able to separate art from the artist, the art must not be encouraging the problematic things the artist does, you must be able to critique the art and/or artist, and no...... 1 reply
I wish that I could separate them, but I have found that if an artist decides to try be a political stooge that has the duty to tell everyone how to live, or if they are filthy scum pedos like Ezra Miller, or abusers etc, then I can’t enjoy their work anymore. Their real persona intrudes when I see them or hear them and their work becomes grating...... reply
honestly, it really depends on what theyre doing. nicki manaj for example is someone i cant tolerate, she openly collabs with pedos, her stans doxx the victims, she stands by her rapist brother, she bullies new female rappers unless it benefits her, shes just overall a weird ass person who gives "cover up! your rapist uncle is coming inside our hou...... reply
Yes it's ok. It really comes down to the individual. This might be a bad analogy but it's like a parent and a child. You can separate them to a certain point. The child will have their own thoughts and feelings and people may see them apart from their parents, but they only exist because of their parents, the same with art. Art will be interpreted ...... reply
oh yah absolutely. take people like nicki minaj and cavetown for example. cavetown said some antisemitic bullshit and someone in this thread already explained about minaj, hence why i'm uncomfortable supporting them as creators. if you want to continue listening to the music without the guilt of supporting the artist, pirate it! especially kanye lo...... reply
I mean if you have the mindset that “artist bad so art bad”, it’d be almost impossible to find art you like where you completely agree with the artist’s actions/mindset.
Of course, there are exceptions when they do/say/think something completely horrible where you can’t even stand listening to them, that’s true and you’re free do do...... reply
For me it depends on the severity of what they did. I'll listen to the music of someone who's just problematic online (jay park, doja cat etc.) but I draw the line at listening to the music of people who are literal abusers. 1 reply
