why are bl fans so misogynistic?
i need to rant about this because i've seen this happen literally everywhere, in every form of media, not just bls. misogyny is so rampant in those communities and i have no fucking idea why?
why do you, as a woman, hate women characters so much and insist on sidelining them/saying misogynistic comments about them just for your little gay ship? take arcane for example. when jayvik became a thing, mel suddenly got so much unwarranted hate from the fans. and this is not to hate on jayvik, i think it's a great ship! but jaymel is quite literally canon?
i could name a million other examples but another one that comes to my mind is the love is the illusion spinoff about the child (byul). it seems like byul's ex girlfriend was just used as a plot device and was written in a way by the author to make her annoying and one-dimensional so fans could hate and shit on her. and it worked because the comments were flooded with misogynistic comments about her and even death threats! it's not even just bl fans, it's the authors too! they will deliberately create women that get in the way of the ship and so a hate train is sent to that character.
and i'm aware this is all fiction and all the characters are fictional, but i feel like this happens much too often to be passed off as something that's 'not that deep'?
anyways this was just my thinkpiece that i needed to get out okay bye
i think a lot of people use the phrase "it's just fiction" to justify their behavior, when oftentimes such extreme reactions are rooted in genuine, internalized hatred or emotion, whether they're cognizant of it or not.
i've noticed this too, actually, where female characters are hated on simply because they're paired with a man that certain fans ...... 3 reply
AND THIS, my dear OP, is exactly why you should read RAINBOW CITY. Not only do we have a pretty and smart and strong and lovable AND ADORABLE FEMALE SIDE CHARACTER, my pretty Major Lee Chaeyoon. SHE’S EXTREMELY RELEVANT TO THE PLOT AS WELL! Especially in the novel! So step right up and read rainbow city today! 3 reply
Me when certain ivantill fans hate on Mizi simply bc Till liked her so it was running their ship:
Like no. For starters, hating on the girl just bc Till liked her (we all know it's one sided to, Mizi is taken by Sua) and u know for a fact Ivan and Till is one sided as hell as well. Tho I'm not saying you can't ship ivantill bc of that, it's a ship...... 4 reply
It might be just fiction but it's always been a pattern, not only in BL or fandoms.
This type of mindset stems from the assumption that women are inately overemotional and hysterical.
Every mean girl is catty and two-faced, while male bullies are coded as intimidating and tough (typically anyway).
It's the same reason why Snow White's stepmother i...... 1 reply
Hard agree, it happens wayyyy too much that I would rather they not have any female characters in the BL at all for me it’s the worst when the author writes them in the misogynist way because OF COURSE ppl will hate her (cuz of lack of critical thinking to see through the misogynistic writing). A recent example of ppl hating on the girl for no r...... 1 reply
Internalized misogyny is still an issue in this very day of 2025, always has been and probably always will be. It's present in all media, it's both an issue in readers of BL, and writers, and the internalized misogyny of the writers is reflected in their writing and speaks to the internalized misogyny of the readers.
(I'm talking about an archety...... 2 reply
