poor uke trope
Why is the poor woman/uke trope so common? i always found it uncomfortable but one of the things that made me feeling worse is the fact that everytime a k-drama/manwha uses this trope it's almost ALWAYS the person in the relationship which is perceived as more feminine, either being a woman or being a bottom (yes i know bottoms aren't always twinks, but even while being masculine they're still percieved as "the woman in the relationship" by a lot of people.) which maybe I'm too woke but it feels awfully misogynist and icky.
I know that this trope was used in Western media as well. Cinderella falls under that trope too, at least in my opinion, and maybe I'm not consuming enough west media to notice, but it feels way more common and popularized in korea. Is there a specific reason why poverty is so romanticized there, or just power unbalance in general?
no ur true for that and not "too woke". i hate this too, i js hate power imbalances in general honestly. the whole "masc">"fem" is reinforced so much. maybe people enjoy the FANTASY of a healthy power imbalance. ie. they like the possibility of someone having the power over them and still loving them and treating them as equals. it's a power fantas...... reply
1 word misogyny.
But if you want a detailed more explanation cus I did a little research on this. Have it.
Ukes or the women are always portrayed in tropes that appears to be weak and in need of saving, like you gave example which we will refer to them as the "Cinderella". I mean it is literally called the Cinderella effect lmao. Anyways this h...... 1 reply
you are not "too woke". being woke isn't a bad thing. misgony and sexism has been a huge issue in korean bls. SOME female korean bl authors have internalized misogyny. korea is extremely conservative, sexist, and misogynistic. like you said, bottoms in korean bl are usually perceived as feminine, "the woman in the relationship". not all, but A LOT ...... 3 reply
Now I'm wondering too, but, the way I see it: maybe the thing that's romanticized is the act of being saved or helped by someone. We generally put ourselves in the main characters shoes, and so we idealize their story. We idealize someone charming and better off sweeping us off our feet and giving us the life we've dreamed of. We see ourselves in t...... 2 reply
at first i thought it was like really weird and uncalled for, but as i watched alot of kdramas and other media with a poor bottom or woman, i kind of just thought that it might be because the show makers wanted to popularize their show by keeping the main central attention towards an ordinary, living pay check off of pay check girl and a ceo or a v...... reply
