why is it so hard for cis-het people to get queer subtext?
sometimes i'm watching something and i immediately clock if something is queer or not, and when i point it out to cis-heterosexual people, they mostly either take it as a joke or dismiss it. why can't they see the blatant subtext that lies in pieces of media?
it's less about an inability to see queerness and more about the conditions people were raised in. popular media has long been shaped by heteronormative narratives, so anything that falls outside that frame is often dismissed or reinterpreted to fit it. the world is just largely structred by cisheteropatriarchal norms, and queerness is often overlo...... 3 reply
Speaking as a lesbian, honestly most of the time I also either don't notice or don't care about any romantic subtext, whether it's between a same-sex or opposite-sex couple.
Unless two characters admit out-loud their attraction or feelings to one another, I am always going to assume there's literally nothing romantic going on between them. I don'...... 1 reply
