how do i make friends at college
I’m a freshman very far away from home and i have no friends. i’m going to a state uni, and man i’m cooked. it’s predominantly white, it’s so hard to make friends and i feel so weird wherever i go. it’s a very liberal school so im happy that there’s people that share my same political stance but idk if anyone shares my interests. there’s cliques already, like the white girls who like to party, the indie white girls who listen to 80s rock, the alt kids, the frat boys and etc but i’m asian and i fit into none of those things. college just started and im already dorm camping and ordering food, i literally don’t eat because i have no one to go with to the dining hall which is like a 25 min walk from my dorm, and even in the welcome week thing, there’s so many people that it’s so hard to just go up to them and talk. i love my roommate but she does her own thing and i love that for her, it’s just so bad because the only person i talk to is literally the one girl who’s republican and it’s bc we are both lonely.
Well to start with, I would recommend becoming ok with the idea of doing stuff alone. You don't have anyone to go with so you're just not going out, and since you're not going places or events you're not meeting new people who might become your friends, and since you're not making friends you don't have anyone to go with.... You're in a vicious cyc...... reply
Seek out clubs or sports, that usually helps a ton. Also don't be scared to talk to people in your classes and ask to share phone numbers for studying. Getting together to study honestly counts as a hangout in my book.

common practice is to go along with people who are the same as you. since you mentioned that your uni is predominantly white, don't be too shy and approach people with common interests. do you game or do you like a certain genre of music? you can bring up topics when getting to know ppl. a trick i learned was to approach people who are alone too an...... reply
okay queen, I started uni too (im from Australia if it makes a difference) and I had left my high school friends because they weren't for me, so it was fresh start.
I promise you, be extroverted and just go up to them, start from your own major/course, go in person to your classes and talk to the person next to you or on your table, compliment the...... 2 reply
If you are specially looking for making friends with people who are more similar to you culturally, then definitely recommend exploring student organizations. There are student associations for like every race/ethnicity - for example, I am sure they have an Asian American Student Association. Even if you don't care about race/ethnicity, they likely...... reply
When I started college, I talked to the first person I met when getting off the bus. Saying "Oh you study there, too? Which major?" and it led to a conversation. We weren't a good match because our interests and personalities were very different so I tried again when I went to class a few days later. I observed while waiting in the hallway and saw ...... reply
Don't be afraid to talk to people. Yes people are scary but don't let them hold you down. In my first day, i legit talked to everyone (coming from a very introvert girl) i was trying to go out from my comfort zone and i did it. Front, back, left and right. I just talk. I tried finding common interest. If both don't have any. Try using college strug...... 1 reply
Join some Organization that has ur skills or hobbies in it. Also you're already doing a good job by being observant, bc you might end up knowing you have the same interest as someone. Geeking out with ppl is one way ticket to be their friends. Honestly that feeling of loneliness really sucks, I've been there. I know u said ur feeling lonely and wan...... reply
As all comments have mentioned, seek clubs that match your interests because nothing creates solid friendships than nerds getting together. There's a good chance that there are clubs for Asian culture appreciation that you could join if you want to connect with people similar to your roots. Seek out some clubs involving physical activities like tre...... reply
