i hate the green/red/black flag term.
i hate these especially when i ask people how they feel or think about a character. like, what the fuck do you mean your answer is "they're a red flag so i hate them" THAT'S IT????????
as someone who chronically reads all type of fictional story i feel like this is too shallow of a description. characters shouldn't just fall to these labels. i think even if a character is the GREENEST flag out there, that doesn't automatically mean they're GOOD CHARACTER or interesting. I WANT DEPTH. How is this character written? What motivates the action of this character? How does their action affect the story? Will this character make me want to continue reading just to find out more about them? y'know, characters that would make you question a lot of things and characters that would show you something you don't see everyday.
like, if a character is created just based solely on being good or bad, no depth, no nothing, just plain good guy / bad guy. i find this VERY BORING AND UNINTERESTING.
and for people who lack media literacy who are so quick to point finger just because people like characters who are morally questionable. WHY? can we not enjoy a character simply because they are written well? and not because they are relatable or whatever y'all seem to think. (PERSONALLY I LOVE LOVE LOVE DOTTORE, BUT I WOULD NEVER WANT TO MEET THIS GUY IRL)
simply putting these "labels" to a character reduces them to just that and makes people refuse to further understand all these wide range of characters. also ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG ABOUT LIKING CHARACTERS WHO YOU DEEM RED/BLACK FLAGS. but disliking them solely for that reason without even finding out more about the character...? (unless the charcter has done something that might trigger you, this is a different topic)
at the end of the day i believe fiction is fiction. it helps me cope and imagine scenario with the comfort of that scenario being UNREAL. and for me to like a character– how they're written will always matter more than these plain labels. reminder that liking a character doesn't ALWAYS mean that you agree with their actions. okayyyy!!!!

I agree with most of what was said but i think there is a little confusion. If you like the character because they are well written even if they are morally wrong or degenerates, thats fine cause you appreciate the main features of the author's work from an appreciative view point. Green/red flags aren't necessarily supposed to be 'personality conclusives' per sé, they're merely *indicators* of particular behaviors or characteristics. You can say "this character is a red flag!" while simultaneously acknowledging that they are complex or well-written. I agree with the liking a character doesn't mean that you agree with their actions. I love Dokja but I don't agree with him killing/sacrificing himself however I can see why he did it, and that is so in line with his character.

I kind of agree with you because I do remember writing this long essay about why I appreciated this morally grey character or their depth (the story is not that good ngl) and the person who replied on mgg was like " no he's fucking absolute bad yada yada he did this" which was...really fucking disappointing ngl.
