Originally, no, the word Otaku was a bad term for someone who is basically a hermit who lives and breathes things like electronics, comics, movies, anime, etc. In Japan the word still has a bad connotation and most people will frown upon you if you describe yourself as an otaku. I know in the west now otaku usually just means a big anime fan.   reply
