Pretty sure first manga was Loveless. Anime I'm not sure which one I saw first but it was definitely either Pokémon (the original/first one) or Sailor Moon (also original not the remake). I agree, it's just because some yaoi have more smut than others, the more boring it looks the less smut a manga/manhwa has, and I do think the more desensitized you are to it the more you *might* need more smut to find it hot or smutty at least, so people more new to yaoi or less desensitized are going to be more turned on by less happening.
