"you're an abyss. a ravine. when people meet you, they just fall right in and they're sunk."
if there's one thing this did well, it's force you to keep reading just to watch the misery spiral. it digs into the ugliest parts of us and at some point, you start rooting for reiji to kill himself because the story makes you believe that it's the only way out.
the characters are intricately interconnected, which unravels in an organic way (hard to do with a large cast) and the pacing is quick and never dull. its a page-turner that knows how to build anticipation, but this comes at the expense of impact because when you flit between trauma, and shock, and death, so quickly, you can't linger and explore the resonance of the emotions.in return for the drama and thrilling highs, you sacrifice believability too. the motives often feel flimsy, as if they're serving the plot rather than being intrinsic to the characters. (e.g. nagi abandoning her idol activities to marry esemori, move to a hick town, and work at some convenience store just because he told her he'd die with her? it's not totally implausible, but that sort of thing keeps happening over and over, as if each character has to make the most outlandish, often illogical choice because the universe doesn't allow anyone to heal or think rationally or breathe for a single second.) the various depictions of misery were compelling, but your empathy for the characters and ability to see them as real people is limited by their over-dramatics. at some point the world they're in stops feeling like reality anyway, instead becoming a mythical larger than life soul-sucking folk-tale thriller about a town that pulls you under.
alternatively it's the most hysterical bisexual murder harem ever written. among reji's suitors there is: a washed up popstar trying to start a suicide pact to sate her survivor's guilt, childhood friend who uses reiji as his cigarette gopher but is actually in love with him because of the trauma-bond he formed after being forced to murder reiji's father, childhood friend who wants to become a main character so badly she forces herself onto reiji as a solution, high school teacher who wants reiji to cure her loneliness and feed her saviour complex, mother's old classmate and failed love who used to and still loves her and fixates on reiji and pushes him into a suicide pact he couldn't go through with in his youth, and at the root of it all is reiji's mother, whose abyssal hunger for self-destruction born out of a childhood of suffering keeps reiji chained to his waking nightmare of a non-life so they can be miserable together. like holy shit this shouldn't work but somehow it works.
everyone wants reiji for their own selfish reasons because reiji's not a boy, he's a blank slate to project their needs onto and escape themselves, but that's all illusion because the town's not letting you go anywhere. it's farcical in its spectacle, outlining over and over how you cant ever leave behind the crushing legacy of your home, and your family, and your past, which is a pretty childish and one dimensional way to view existence. the lack of hope and redemption doesn't just make it 'dark' it makes the story shallow, but i still couldn't stop reading. it's an elaborate well-paced torture labyrinth.
can't say i was moved but it would be a lie to say i wasn't entertained.
reread
i don't even know why i tried. funniest manga ever
