Such a good read! I really enjoyed the plot and machinations of the palace, they were a great setting and well developed. The story had a good pacing and not only the two leads were very enjoyable, the surrounding cast was also interesting. I'm not giving 5 stars just because I felt a spark missing, but this was a tight story that didn't drag on too long nor cut off too early and it has all the characteristics to be a new favourite.

180626 s (70.2) holy shit what a ride oh my god?!! i thoroughly enjoyed reading this. the plot is so fascinating, complicated and intricate, with so many layers of planning. i genuinely could not put it down. i kept on clicking ‘next chapter’ bc i had to see what happens next. i love how there is so much drama in it, it is perfect for a historical manhwa. it does insist that it’s set in a ‘fictional’ world at the start of each chapter, but it is almost bar for bar inspired by ancient china lol. the only fictional part about it is the geography of the country and the fantasy elements, so if you’re a fan of that, i absolutely recommend it. it’s honestly so underrated, i don’t get why it only has a 8.9 rating. i put it off for over a year bc of it, but i’m so glad i finally got around to reading it.

starting off with the characters! i love ryu hui-kyeom sooo much, he’s such a great main character. he’s so beautiful and badass and his personality was really interesting too. i was really rooting for him to achieve his revenge this entire time. on the other hand, the love interest, jin hyeok-wi (prince yeong), was lowkey a huge red flag for a big portion of the manhwa. that moment when he broke hui-kyeom’s foot was crazy bruh. all because hui-kyeom didn’t trust him yet, meanwhile he’s done nothing to earn his trust. all he did was threaten him constantly and then he wonders why he doesn’t trust him LOL. the worst part was that within a couple of chapters, they act like it never happened. hyeok-wi’s personality is so twisted, but honestly, his character was kinda perfect for a period drama like this.

by the end, when the misunderstandings between hyeok-wi and hui-kyeom are finally cleared up, the two of them are genuinely sooo cute. the moment when hui-kyeom realised his feelings for hyeok-wi was actually beautiful. and then when he confessed?! my heart omg. i really loved their dynamics, they were so wholesome i swear. they’re so in love with each other.

i especially loved the final two chapters (the epilogue). they were genuinely adorable oh my god. it gave me so much happiness seeing their happy little family after all that they have been through. their kids are SO cute. i’m a little sad they never moved to the west together, because they had spoken of it multiple times. but this ending does make a lot more sense considering the plot, with hyeok-wi becoming emperor. this is one of those rare times where the ending is actually satisfying, which was SUCH a nice change. it was so nice getting actual answers on why they were repeating their lives, and it was a perfect way to end the story.

one thing that was missing was that general hui never ended up getting back together with hyeok-wi’s aunt, and he also never ended up adopting hui-kyeom. that was like an entire plot point, so it was disappointing that it was left out. i feel like the author just forgot about it, because it was really essential to solidifying hui-kyeom’s identity and providing security for his position.

overall, it was a great read. if you’re able to stomach a toxic and honestly quite non-consensual relationship at the start, i thoroughly recommend it. i promise it gets better, and you really can’t help but root for the two of them. the plot is really intriguing and the ending was soo cute.
