Like way before wattpad was even made, FanFiction. Net was the go to for writing fanfiction.
Currently AO3 (aka Archive of our own), is the most used site for fanfiction.
Also, individual fanfiction sites for specific fandoms were popular.
Heck Star Trek fandom literally pioneered the online fanfiction writing movement.
Sure, Wattpad was popular for some time mainly because it was used by very young members of some fandoms that would usually migrate to better sites once their taste matured and they couldn't anymore read the stories written by teens that were subpar.
Also, wattpad is such shit App and site right now it's a dumpster fire of a company. They had a breach of info they didn't disclose to their users until much later so all of your private info was leaked. Like the emails used, gender info, everything. They are very bad to the authors that actually post there. It's a shit show.
I know there are many other better sites, I’ve been using them for a long time, and I’m the first one to admit how shitty wattpad is (and was) as an app. I also use Ao3 just for you to know, I’m not that ignorant.
